that was literally Dahl's best player from the safety position....ever. i was shocked it was such a fantastic play.
Sounds like I missed Dahls best play
Can't tell the coverage call, but Reaser and Dahl are playing the 'Cut' technique on the #2 WR.
DAL: trail concept with the red In route clearing the way for the orange In route.
I forgot to number the WRs. But the closest to the sideline is #1, next inwards is #2 (orange), then next in is #3.
Reaser takes outside leverage to defend outside breaking routes. Over the top positioning to defend any vertical route. If #2 goes vertical, Reaser will match him.
Dahl is making a flat foot read of #2, not gaining any depth, he's not playing as a cover2 safety. He's ready to cover #2 if #2 breaks inside towards the middle of the field.
The QB is thinking: With the red route clearing #29 out of the way, the orange route should be open.
The #2 WR breaks inside. Dahl is now responsible for that route as Reaser replaces Dahl's spot on the field. Reaser is seen pointing, passing off coverage of #2. Dahl will cut the route, and is breaking before the QB has even started his motion since Dahl is reacting to #2.
Dahllin'!
I'm still skeptical of mango is defense as I know it will work earlier in the yard but think it will struggle later. However, that was a damn good disguise coverage but an even better play by Dhal.

That and the previous week the defense had that back to back to back goaline stand. My oh my this defense is something else.

don't be man. this will work whenever. it might not result in an interception but it's sound. everybody is covered.
it just gives the safety a chance to make a play. earlier nc posted reid saying how excited he was that the safeties would have a chance to make plays. because of the blitz conspiracy everyone assumed he meant going to the line of scrimmage and trying to get sacks.
no this is what he meant. if dahl made it there right on time to intercept the pass. reid makes it there before the wr gets there and is running to the end zone and nobody on the cowboys would even try to stop them they'd just trot to the sideline.
we've always pattern matched. the past 4 years so it's not new. what it seems like is we're going to put the ball hawks in a position to hawk the ball. instead of sitting back and pass defending. they're hitting and intercepting passes.
bowman mentioned his 3rd down play too. he mentioned how he was up near the line of scrimmage acting like he was going to blitz on 3rd down but really had the rb in the flat. romo made the right read for the right look. it just wasn't what he thought it was going to be. snapped the ball and bowman met the running back at the sideline. just like mangini planned.
the more they play the more excited i am. i want daily reports from practice with peyton. i want to hear what he has to say. if he tips his cap to this defense i don't know what ill do.

not so fast.
all of the defensive picks and additions over the past couple of years that everyone scratched their heads over don't look so silly now do they?

He guided Peyton Manning into doing what he wanted him to do. I can only imagine what our defense would have looked like with the full compliment of players. If we just have Pat Willis and Aldon smith with his mind, don't even need anyone else, just those 2 it would probably be one of the best defenses anyone saw.
He mixed up the looks but they weren't really revealing. He mixed in simple blitzes but they were perfect. How many times have you seen Peyton manning just fully fooled on play? He's pegged as the coach on the field, he always gets people into the right play, the right protection etc but there were 3 times in the first half he just had to play dead.
There were more than a few pass break ups because the coverage on the outside by johnson and acker on one of the best wr's in the nfl was beautiful.
he put players in position to make their plays. I am so confident in him at this point its scary.

To illustrate your point.
man to man on the outside, zone in the middle of the field
at the snap bowman is lined up in regular position no indication he's coming. they don't account for him, you can tell the rb isn't responsible for him because there is no blitz protection called he just goes and floats up to the line to help out.
bowman comes with the blitz.. before the rb can even react it's already over.
this is also especially great because mangini must know that the broncos like to take a shot at the end zone on 1st down because this could have easily been one of those quick routes or rub routes or flare or crossing patterns and the middle would have been wide open
but it's not it's a long developing route with a free blitzer right up the middle
beautiful all around

The only coaching hire that has made me confident over the preseason.

The RB reacted to the wrong gap.

This one is just because Bowman is the best linebacker in the nfl.
pre snap looks like it's going to be a blitz. it's man to man across the board but the really unique or good part about this is that it's designed to account for bowman being picked up by the running back. that's the genius of this particular call.
if you notice before the snap bowman is at the line of scrimmage and wilhoite is at normal depth not creeping up.
at the snap everyone goes to their assigned man. bowman comes through but he is basically in a kamikaze role by design. he's supposed to go and eat up the block by the rb. guess who's right behind him unblocked if the rb does his job? wilhoite.
but bowman is so good he destroys the play before it starts.

that's because bowman isn't accounted for. i just posted one where bowman is showing a blitz look and the rb is responsible for picking him up but can't. the rb in the 1st gif isn't accounting for bowman at all.
also look at the nuance of how bowman rushed. he came right behind the lineman and the rb was right behind the lineman and then dipped at the last moment through the gap.
the instinct of blitzing has always been there for him and pat we just never used it.

Can't wait to see this defense during the season! Mangini will have these guys making big plays all year long!
