While I do not love the hire I also do not hate it.
He must have done something to get a promotion from assistant to coordinator under BB. He was then a DC with the Pats for one year before getting a HC'ing gig. The D finished middle of the pack but were ravaged by injuries...they did fine vs the run but struggled vs the pass without Ty Law and Rodney Harrison.
This is just another appeal to authority. Someone a lot smarter than you liked him....so he must be good. It's a joke argument. BASG even points this out...Mangina's gift is smoozing and kissing the right asses....not actually being good at his job.
Right he has stayed in the NFL as a coach for being a good ass kisser not coach. Talk about joke arguments.

While I've been one of the most critical of the Tomsula hire, in all honestly I don't dislike this hire (fairly neutral).
There were absolutely better options available that weren't blocked (Jim Schwartz, Mike Smith) but with that said, Mangini is one of the more qualified defensive coaches out there.
He was a longtime Belicheck protege, was DC of a great Patriots defense (so great he got a HC job after 1 year at DC), and really did a solid job turning the abysmal Jets around in his stint there as HC by improving their horrendous defense and even reaching the playoffs. His biggest downfall was with the Browns where he exhibited many of the arrogant qualities that Josh McDaniels did. Like McDaniels, his journey to follow was definitely humbling and I think he will be a better coach for it. Mangini has been succesful as a DC and (for a while) as a HC, not to mention he was groomed in X's and O's by Belicheck himself.
Can't LOVE the hire since there were better options, but between Tarver, Sporano and now Mangini our staff has gotten infinitely more experience than a few days ago. Keep in mind there is nothing wrong with a failed HC, they often make the best coordinators as they obviously had to be a top echilon coach/coordinator at some point to get the HC gig in the first place so anytime you can add a failed HC in a non-HC role you know that person atleast brings great coaching or coordinating expertise. Just like if Tomsula were to fall flat on his face as a HC, most teams would be lucky to have him as a d-line coach.

We've gone from the best coaching staff to accepting the average. At this rate, I just hope we can equal 8 wins.

What has Manigina ever done in NE? Ask any Pats fan, he was garbage and a rat. Ask any CLeveland/Jets fan. Same thing. Hes garbage, garbage, garbage...
I seriously think he was a rat with us. Dude gave a bad vibe in NYJ and CLE.
Tomsula's biggest weakness may be his trust.

The players still have to go out and make plays. This coaching staff is already way more competent than the Singletary and Nolan staffs (Nolan sucked and we couldn't keep decent OC's).
You can't judge the coaching or style until they play games.

Well using your own logic, you can't say this group is more competent than the Singletary/Nolan days until they play the games.

I think some folks are probably looking real hard to find silver linings in every hire. Obviously, it's all opinions at this point.
Glass half full...half empty situation - the way this whole thing was handled by the org tells a lot about the end product. Anything can happen, but usually the scenario with the most probability happens.

Sparano, Mangini, and Tarver are all more competent based on track record.

This isn't a bad hire. Not inspiring either (Wade Phillips anyone?), but they could've done a lot worse. Mangini is back to the side of the ball he's familiar with. Something tells me we could've had Ed Donatell as our DC and made Mangini our DBs coach, a position he's had some success with. However if you look at Magini's brief record as a DC/HC and his defenses it isn't that much unlike Vic Fangio's, pre-49ers. Perhaps our D can have the same effect on him.
I'll be honest. I really don't like the guy and hoping he does so well he becomes a hot candidate for a HC job next year and we can get someone less detestable in that spot.

So we push out a HC who was successful but promote a tight end coach who saw the teams worst positional regression.
By now Nothing surprises me. I dont care if he did do it before

Track record as losing HCs and statistically bad defenses? Oh and btw, Mangini's defenses have NEVER been in the top half in yards allowed/game.

Good DC, especially with our personnel. Manginious got that nickname for a reason.

He had some winnings seasons in NY. Sparano had success as a TE coach and OL coach. Tarver is an up and coming DC that took a demotion to LB coach.

Didn't Jimmy Raye have a lot of experience too?
