His track record has been very respectable and the reason why he was the TE coach so he can gain an offensive perspective and how offenses like to attack defense. Since he has that perspective on that concept, his defensive philosophy has changed significantly, and for the better. I didn't want Mangini as the defensive coordinator but he's doing a good job so far.

Respect.

My guess is that most of them are pretending they never felt that way.

Ill admit i felt that way. I didnt like his track record as he didnt seem to add anything to the team. Putting him as a TE coach was one of the dumbest things a HC has done imo. I was worried about him as a DC. But now I can see what he brings to the table as a DC. I wanna see the D against a good offnse (Pitt) but ill happily eat crow.

Im not like these other posters. I dont like every decision thats made but im not gonna act like Im an expert or only show up when the team loses to talk s**t.

I think all coordinators should put in time on the other side of the ball. This experience provides an invaluable perspective and actually makes you a better strategist. I'm not buying the nostalgia for Vic when posters looked down on Mangini - just check the posts from the first page of this thread onward to refresh your collective memories. If Mangini's career should be criticized, it should be for when he was a HC. His coordinator experience is solid - the best DC Bill Belichick ever had. I just hope he stays in SF long enough for his players to really get to know his scheme, inside and out.

I'm fine with it. Back to his strengths as a coach, and has Tarver (and possibly Fewell) as positions/assistant defensive coaches. That's a pretty strong and experienced defensive coaching staff, and that's not even including Tomsula as HC and maybe Young as DL coach.

Ended up getting Franklin instead of Young, but yeah, I'm feeling good about my initial take on this hire.

Staying just on the defensive side, I'd put Seifert above Fangio. Team won 2 SBs while he was DC, including arguably the best defense in SF history ('84 team).

If you start including offense.... Holmgren and Shanahan definitely better coordinators than Fangio.

I'd ABSOLUTELY put Seifert above Fangs. Some will say that Seifert's job was made easier by all the superstars on his teams, but Fangs had his studs too. Seifert's defensive units played at a higher level for a longer period of time.
Dilfer said he learned a lot from Mangini during their time at ESPN. Says dude is smart as hell and I don't doubt it. I love the aggression he calls plays with. I know blitzing can burn you but I feel we have a good trio of smart safeties. Bridgewater had to get hit early to know that he would not be in for easy throws all night. A hit on the QB even without the sack is very important.
Give us your thoughts on how this one went tonight.

"Man, all phases came out and played today. Our preparation this whole preseason, the week before the game, it was a long week for us. They way we prepared, we just knew in our hearts we were going to come in this game and win. Our preparation was outstanding and I've honestly never prepared like that during the week on a team before."

We dominated game 1 last year as well. I was encouraged by what I saw on offense and defense, but we will see what he does against a vet QB like Ben next week. One game does not make a season, but admit I liked what I saw.

I felt that way. I was more optimistic about Mangini than the rest of the staff and am MORE than happy to admit that so far I was wrong. The team was completely different on both sides of the ball. Great game planning, scheming, and preparation. Hoping this continues.

I'm gonna be REAL disappointed if the 9ers defense finishes in the top 10 and Mangini bolts for a head coaching gig.

It funny because of the perceived lack of talent on defense if they continue to play well he is going to get a ton of credit. We do have a young talented coach on deck though in Tarver that is hopefully learning from him.

Thank you. George Seifert is not only the best DC in franchise history, but he's an innovator in the history of NFL defense. Nobody had used situational substitutions on the D-line like Seifert. Plus, Seifert had at least two #1 defenses and a couple of #2 defenses. Fangio was great, but not as good as Seifert IMO.

Yup. Coaching isn't all success or failure. You can have winning seasons then lose the touch. You can have losing seasons then figure things out. Fans look at things as zero sum too often.

To be fair, that defense had a very deadly offense which was led by the greatest big game QB of all time and the greatest player of all time. If Fangio had that offense, we would easily win 3 superbowls (2011-2013)
