they already have the money for the tag. Buckner/Kittle are under contract for 2020. They will sign extensions, not replacement deals.
Why would they need major new pieces if they're already the best team in the NFL? Keep it going. Everybody is super young and locked up.

We'll get a preview over the rest of this postseason, but the ceiling of the 2020 49ers defense — presumably under Robert Saleh — seems extraordinarily high. The 49ers have already done financial maneuvering, presumably in hopes of keeping most/all of that gang together

Armstead's contract is a tough one. His value and production with us is greater than what it would be for a team with a lesser defense. Whether we tag or contract him we will be overpaying but we have learned that pass rush justifies overspending because it makes every single position on the defense better. If we tag him and he performs at a similar level or better next year it will make him even more expensive. Could cost us an extra couple million per year for his deal. Paying a top dollar contract for somebody who was a no show until contract year is just too scary for me though. Tag him and reassess. Dee Ford's health will really dictate a lot about what we do as it's clear that having two scary edge defenders is overwhelming and we need the flexibility to ensure that is in place for as long as possible.
