Fans who are suggesting we don't have cap room to sign AND extend the big pieces are simply just making it up out of fear.

Do the 49ers have enough money? Right now, they have roughly $14 million in 2020 cap space. They can actually save space by extending Buckner, and there are other potential savings baked into potential releases (players like McKinnon and Goodwin). More restructures also possible

There are obviously dozens of different combinations of where exactly the 49ers can free up cap room, so key point is that they've already started the process and we'll see how exactly they continue it moving forward. It does seem possible to keep most of bigger names for 2020.

What does it matter? Niners can easily pay him and Buckner market rates. Nobody needs to take a discount.

We wouldn't. That's who will take him as a UFA. It's the reason to either sign him or tag him. And another reason the "lets just get that 2021 #105th pick" line of reasoning is ridiculous.

The 2021 salary cap is set to explode with the new CBA. And even if it didn't... the elite DL is what makes this roster special. It means you can take chances in other areas of the roster, particularly the secondary.

Can the Niners afford $15 - $19 million franchise tag this upcoming season for AA and still sign one or two of their other FAs (Sanders / Ward)? Any "capologists" out there?
