There's no denying Arik had a great year. However, one must be the devil's advocate and question whether all the help around him had a lot to do with it, as well as it being a contract season. I'm old enough to remember a D-lineman named Dana Stubblefield who had a phenomenal contract season, got the big money and virtually disappeared. I'm not saying this will be Arik, in fact, I'm confident it won't be, but it should at least beg the question, and those begging the question shouldn't be vilified for it.

it is very ODD... prior to the season most fans believed that Buckner will have a better year and better stats from the year before because of BOSA... instead, it's his Duck Twin that ended up blooming.

Armstead for OBJ, trade down and take a wr and dlinemen. But honestly I don't see armstead regressing asking as we have our current group and he stays healthy. A lot need to remember he was a huge project coming out and was already very good at stopping the run. He still young so who says he can't get better? So kinda wanna keep him and keep the dline as he best in the NFL but I'm selfish and want a top dog at wr also

That's the scouting report? That Armstead was never beating doubles and was getting cheapies? That his dominant run stopping was just RBs purposefully running into him? That he didn't shed blockers with ease?

... and that's why the question is... how much do we give Buckner if AA ends up staying for less than 18 million but puts up better stats than Buckner next year!!

What do you guys think about the possibility of Tagging him and then trade him during/before the draft for picks?

Doubt that happens since the F.O love Arik and want to reward him for his excellent season he's just had. I say we try to keep this D together and focus on improving it even further. 2020 Dominate the opposition.

The way I look at it, Arik had a really good year and I'm glad he did, but if I had to choose to pay Buck, Bosa, or Armstead... He is my third choice every time. I'd rather take that high salary and keep Warner, Blair, DJ Jones, Tartt, Ward. I think for what he is going to want (and id demand a high salary as well lol) annually is close to what we would pay all those guys combined.
We are going to have to shell out big money to keep some guys - I just don't think he would be the guy I'd go with out of the young talent we have today.
I'd most likely tag and trade him. Lol but what the hell do I know, I'm a real estate developer. Fun to speculate though

We can let him go and shift DeFo into AA's responsibilities and promote one of our solid backups to DeFo's spot. I don't think we lose much due to our depth at DL.
The bigger question is, what do we do with Dee Ford?

Why intentionally disrupt the NFL's best DL, and this defense's hallmark, when you don't have to?
If there's one position group to spend elite money on (aside from QB) it's the DL. Letting Armstead go would be a massive unforced error.

This is what I would do, and what I think we should do. DeFo can do spot duty at the 3 tech, but he would actually do better in the big end roll then Armstead did IMO with one caveat...I would not put DeFo at the end on pure pass rushing downs like we sometimes did with Armstead. I think some of that may have been because Ford and Blair were hurt though. I would rather than a grunt taking on double teams in the middle and plugging gaps. Those guys are a dime a dozen, and we can find someone else to play the run (and probably do a better job than DeFo if we're being honest).
Honestly, I would rather find someone more athletic to play Armstead's roll and occasionally put DeFo in that roll too. I really don't like putting Armstead at DE on passing downs. Athletic QB's like Russell, Mahomes, Murray and Jackson run around too much. We need more of an athlete at the DE on those downs.
I really like Armstead, but this is really a roster construction question. I think we can fill his roll with other players who would actually be better and we can leverage his hype to get a pick or two.

They're not going to do that. Buckner is our best defensive lineman, 3 tech is the ideal spot to create pressure, that's where he's going to end up. If we get rid of AA it just means Solly will take AA's spot.

So move DeFo from a position where he plays at a high level into a position we haven't asked him to play. And move someone who was being asked to play limited snaps in rotation into a bigger load.
You are hoping there will be little to no drop off in play. It's a move that carries risk and assumes that the chemistry up front will still be the same with 2 positions being affected.
I can't see Kyle being on board given he didn't want to move Glinch to the left when Staley went down. He didn't want to risk affecting two positions and chose to slide the backup in for Joe and issue help to the backup on that side. I think it would be the same here, let's not affect two positions especially when you a trying to move a player who plays well at his current position.

Who cares where AA played. That's not the point. The point is we had 4 legitimate pass rushers with him, Defo, Bosa, and Ford. Moving Defo to AA's spot literally does nothing. You're still losing a pass rusher.
Remove AA, and the team has 2 pass rushers+1 edge rusher who is always hurt, so you've really only got 2 you can depend on.
