Or even if Ford gets you 8 and Blair or someone else rotating in gets you 4. There's your replacement of his production.

Meanwhile Thomas/Street/Taylor are your run defending DL in Base along with of course Bosa Buckner and Jones. The point is, just because Armstead is better than those guys doesn't mean that we can't lose him and still maintain a great defense.

Also I'm not saying I want Armstead to leave. I'm just saying if he leaves, we have guys that can play the run in base and we have guys (and can still add guys) to get the edge on 3rd down.

Coaching staff has said and shown they like and want Street and Taylor inside. So they are not replacement candidates.

Thomas is a lesser run defender compared to AA.

You are rarely going to find day one equivalent production in the draft or via FA for a fraction of the price for a player who is good run defender and who put up 10 sacks.

Keep in mind Julian Taylor and Ron Blair are coming off ACL injuries. They may be on IR most or all of next year. Best thing to do assuming creating more cap space is, Tag AA, resign D Moore, resign To a 1 year deal. Regroup after next season.
There are definitely things the FO can do to clear up big money for AA as well as extend Buckner and Kittle:

Released/Traded or Restructured Candidates: [Freed up $]
Jimmy Garoppolo (Restructure) - $26.6M cap for 2020 / per Brad & AB from OTC, could free up [$15M-$19M]
Richard Sherman (Restructure/Release) - $1M cap / $12.9M savings. Convert base salary into bonus money [$11.9M]
Dee Ford (Restructure/Release) - $6.4M cap / $9.7M savings if cut / per AB, could free up [$10M]
Joe Staley (Restructure) - $11.75M cap for 2020 / per AB, could free up [$7M]
Tevin Coleman (Restructure/Release) - $0 cap/ $4.9M savings. Convert base salary into bonus money [$4.9M]
Kyle Juszczyk (Restructure) - $1.25M cap / $5.5M savings. Convert base salary into bonus money [$4.25M]
Solomon Thomas (Trade) - $8.9M cap / $0 savings [$4M]
Jaquiski Tartt (Extend/Release) - $1.5M cap / $4.9M savings. Convert base salary into bonus money [$3.4M]
Mike Person (Release) - $0 cap/ $2.5M savings [$2.5M]
Marquise Goodwin (Release) - $1.2M cap / $3.6M savings [$2.4M]
Ahkello Witherspoon (Release) - $243K cap / $2.1M savings [$1.86M]
Mark Nzeocha (Release) - $0 cap/ $1.5M savings [$1.5M]
C.J. BeatHard (Trade/Release) - $176K cap / $946K savings [$770K]
Jerick McKinnon (Restructure) - $4M cap / $4.5M savings [$500K]
Jimmy Garoppolo (Restructure) - not gonna happen
Richard Sherman (Restructure/Release) - agree
Dee Ford (Restructure/Release) - not gonna happen
Joe Staley (Restructure) - should retire (nothing else to prove
Tevin Coleman (Restructure/Release) - agree
Kyle Juszczyk (Restructure) - not gonna happen
Solomon Thomas (Trade) - agree (but I feel that he will take a paycut)
Jaquiski Tartt (Extend/Release) - agree
Mike Person (Release) - agree
Marquise Goodwin (Release) - should have been done last season
Ahkello Witherspoon (Release) - agree .. or even trade
Mark Nzeocha (Release) - agree
C.J. BeatHard (Trade/Release) - agree
Jerick McKinnon (Restructure) - we keep Coleman, then Jerick Lame McKinnon is bye bye

Good list!

I could possibly see restructuring Sherman but NOT releasing him. IMO, he's and Tart are all we really have in the secondar

Releasing DFord would NOT be a bad thing. Dollar for Dollar - we didn't get any bang for our buck.

If we are going to keep McK then get rid of Coleman.

I feel we may be able to trade Solly if we sweeten the deal and throw in some of the guys we'd end up releasing anyway

Love this!

More than enough ways to keep Armstead as well as several others
I rewatched the Superbowl in coaches film.

I rewatched AA. No surprise, but he played W9 the entire game. IDT pass rushing in nickel.

Notes:
--- Pinches inside to QB, QB pitches outside him for 7 yards
--- QB fake handoff, rolls right outside the pocket wide open as AA flys inside the opposite direction. 10 yard pass uncontested
--- Bull rush inside, QB goes outside, 20 yard gain; on the next play, he arcs out and then bull rushes (excellent awareness/adjustment)
--- Once again, arcs well, bull rushes inside, but isn't watching Mahomes (an old tendency of his) though and he just rolls outside him and runs for 6 on a HUGE 3rd and 5 from their own 30 after we just went up 10 with 1 minute left in the 3Q. QB had to run basically, about 25 yards to get it too. Damnit. They punt there and we have excellent field position and full momentum. We did end up getting an INT eventually though so no harm no foul this time.
--- Bit hard inside on the RO to Kelce (tackles the RB) that went outside his vacancy. Incredible job on the scrape exchange by Warner though. This was probably textbook by both players but illustrated his tendency to always come inside first.
Lots of really good stuff too.

So I highlight these plays as areas he still needs to work on. He's 6'7" 290 so even as wide as W9, he still has a tendency to lose the outside and sometimes while engaging with the OL, fixates his eyes on the man and not the QB which is a killer against an athletic QB. He's a DE who plays a ton inside so he'll "think like an IDT" while in W9 at times. I think with another year in W9, he'll get better at play recognition and give up less and less on that edge. But he still has a ways to go and the Superbowl illustrated that. I see him correct himself immediately and when he does and keeps his eyes on the QB, he's a force both on the edge and inside. Growth man strength and a repertoire of pass rush moves now.

PS: I watched Ford "run" in the open field. He might be done, people. Seriously.

saying ford is done is ridiculous. he has a sack on cousins and was instrumental in beating the packers. He was very productive this season when he was playing. so saying he is done is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my lifetime. armstead is a ver important player that we will resign but to say ford is done is ludicrous.

you said ford was done which is ridiclous. he will rehab and be 100 percent for next season so you're wrong in that regard. i don't know what gs refers to but I will disregard that. you seem to always be negative on the niners and probably expect su to suck next season based on this post

If AA doesn't stay then I really like the idea of using Buckner like AA in the sense of playing LDE and sliding inside in nickel. I think he might be somewhat more vulnerable to double teams at LDE than AA (in general) but probably more than make up for that in being better at setting the edge and responding more quickly to sneaky offensive plays that tend to pull the LDE inside and the play goes outside.

Literal quote: "He might be done."

He just does not move or run right, even with all that time off. Sad. I hope he'll be fine but I've been hoping that all year long. He's was useless in the Superbowl.

thats why we will reisgn armstead. this team is built around our elite defensive line so I have no doubt that we will resign armstead. also once ford is 100 percent (which he will be) we will be dominant next season
