Just got off work. Wouldn't have liked the pick at 15, but am ok with the addition of a 4th and taking him at 17.

Mike Loyko:
I'm told Brown (Malcom) drew the most interest from 49ers at 15 and Detroit at 23. Obviously board broke different for those teams.

I have a feeling we dealt because Miami took DeVante Parker, and maybe he was our real first choice.
But getting an extra 4th this year, and an extra 5th next year is great value for 2 spots.
This.
Peeps calling it a bust, Balmer part 2...jeez.
Same crap every single year. Just about every mock draft all over the internet thought Armstead was going to the Niners at 15. They move down, get two picks and still draft him and peeps lose their minds. Never fails.
No clue if he pans out or not, but jeez...ya think that maybe, just maybe, Trent knows a little something about selecting players.

P.S not saying age isn't a factor, but sometime guys develop quickly and never grow from there. Remember the one kid the Texans picked a year or two before Watt.I think his name was Okeye or something. He was a 19 year old giant. Everyone was thought in a couple of years he would be unstoppable. Where is he now? He might be solid, but he's certainly not a house hold name.
I think all the concerns are valid. Like I say with every new player...they are Niner's now. And it's rare those concerns aren't quickly alleviated or gradually over time (etc. Brooks, Cox, Bowman, etc.). Just a couple years ago we were saying the same things about Dorsey. He turned out great for us as well and reached his full potential until the injury. Peeps really need to focus on who we are and the systems we run here and see how players like this fit or not. It's exactly why a guy like Jenkins didn't fit and a reason why T.Smith will fit. AA should be no different IMHO!

http://draftbreakdown.com/video/arik-armstead-vs-ohio-state-2014/
since the highlights suck online, here we go. Baalke said this was one of his best:
1:05 - Beastly
2:14 - Kinda cool, sheds some blocks to stop the run, but they still convert
2:21 - Ugly, he takes a weird angle (might've just not had a chance) but still helps finish
2:32 - Right place at the right time and puts a nice shoulder into it to stop the run.
2:58 - Hmm. Had a chance.
4:18 - Sort of ugly, I don't know what gap was his, but it seems like he missed a big opportunity and let the RB run from his endzone for a big gain
4:28 - gets some pressure, but not quick enough to prevent completion for a nice gain
7:25 - Diagnoses the play quickly, sets up... and then kind of falls on the RB and gives up the conversion.
7:38 - Swims (or something) to get inside and gets enough pressure to save a TD
7:53 - Beats his blocker but watches the runner go by.. maybe by design
8:23 - Some pressure, maybe helps an incompletion (fumble?)
8:53 - Seems pretty ugly for run stopping.
9:04 - Runs right at him for conversion.
9:28 - Nice play. Fumble recovery.
9:54 - Runs near him again for conversion.
10:12 - Loses the QB? and gives up 3rd & 1 conversion.
10:46 - Lineman took out his legs, fell down, eyes fell off the QB, and sort of .... lol, another conversion.
10:58 - Ugly.
11:05 - Tracks the run and stops it.
11:27 - Is around the stop.
.... and for the rest of the video they're just running the clock down.
I tried to just find the interesting/impactful plays. Everything else on the video was him double/triple teamed or they pretty much ran away from him. I can see how people watching his tape might thing "oh, man, he's just not giving it his all", but to me they seemed sort of calculated.
I mean, he could have given 110% and been more "in" some of the plays, but as an Oregon fan I always wondered with the DL and the offense's high-pace, and how much they work towards cutting corners where possible to conserve energy, even as notorious as Oregon's practices are for getting players in top shape.

Agreed. The kid only has one true year of football-only experience since he played basketball in the spring of 2012/2013. By year 3 with Tomsula, this guy could be one of the best 3-4 DEs in the league, but it's going to take awhile. Unfortunately, most fans won't wait that long....

here is one opinion.
San Francisco 49ersDraft pick: DL Arik Armstead (No. 17 overall) Draft grade: A
The skinny: GM Trent Balkke likes to move around in the draft and managed to move back just a few spots and land a number of quality selections on day three. On top of that, the team landed one of the most versatile defensive linemen available in Armstead, who can be dominant with a little development

That is a 4th round pick assessment, not a first round pick!
I bet this guy would have been available in the 3rd or 4th round.
Compete fail by Baalke.
Dude...3rd or 4th ROUND!?!
WTF? So far as I can tell he's been projected to the 49ers for several months. If this pick was in any way a surprise to you then you flat haven't been paying attention. 90% of mock drafts ou there had him going to SF.
He's RAW. That's it. He's HUGE for a 5, powerful, and extremely athletic. He played Basketball.
This "he would have been there much later" is the same BS I heard about Aldon, Staley, Frank, and a host of others. The guy simply hasn't played much football and hasn't spent much offseason time learning to play football. He just got drafted by a head coach who was the best D-Line coach in the NFL.
How 'bout you trust that the peeps who do this for a living have a clue what they are going, K?

The trade back was my favorite part of the pick. Armstead was their man and they knew they could get him at 17. Picking up a 4th and 5th was a great move while still getting the player they wanted.

B+
49ers select: Arik Armstead, DE, Oregon This kid has a ton of ability, but he didn't always play like it. Can he reach his potential on the next level? I think he can.

Say what you want about Tomsula as a HC. One thing everyone on this board agreed with is that he is a pimp as a Dline coach. So he knows DLinemen. Gotta think he had some input of the AA selection. One concern I do have is the critique that AA doesn't always "show up" to play. A coach can bludgeon technique into a player's head, but only the player can rev his own motor.

and another opinion
17: San Francisco 49ers (Traded from San Diego)
Arik Armstead, DI, Oregon
Another player who landed on his positional buyer beware list. Armstead has first round tools and barely day two tape, with him finishing only 26th out of draft eligible defensive interior. What's worse is you'd like to see more than the 26 quarterback disruptions he managed, highlighting just how raw he is.
Still the 49ers are preparing for life without Ray McDonald and possibly Justin Smith, so adding a physical freak along the defensive line was always a likely move. He should compete for playing time straight away but he might take a couple of years if he's ever to develop into a consistent every down player.
