Have to give credit to AA. He's been solid all year.

Armstead is actually an above average run defender. Obviously you want sacks from a 1st round DL, but he's actually been a quality player for us, yet everyone calls him a waste of space.

He wont be back because we have too many DL, but hes not a bad player by any means.

Good post. Anyone calling him a waste of space definitely isn't paying close attention to the actual games. He's been a good contributor on the DL this year.

No. Hes been a gimpy player who decided to stick out his contract year so another team will fork over 8m per year for moonbeams and willow wisps. Kaptain klutz

Truth on all counts.

Good article on his improvement.

You mean a 3-4 DE is a good run defender? Nice!

He has had a nice season though. And he's had $9M reasons to play hard every snap. Good for him. He's filled out a lot too this year...getting that man strength.

I'm glad they mentioned his tackling issues. His angles and instincts aren't the best either and if he could tackle better, he'd also have more sacks too.

Overall though, good year to build off of.

For those that don't care to read, PFF says AA is our best defensive player. The defensive MVP. Better than Buckner.
PFF rating of AA is like saying a WR is generally around the ball but drops a ton of passes and has 3 TDs in 3 years! Near elite level!! Wooooooo

I think he will probably always be hampered by slow reflexes and slow recognition of how the play is developing (slow relative to most of the other NFL level players on the field with him). He is also slow at moving laterally until he gets his whole body turned and his legs under him for a couple of steps. I think that's a significant part of the reason he tends to take bad angles.

But it does seem like that experience on the field and probably better conceptual understanding that comes with time has allowed him to compensate better for those limitations than in the past. I do think he has had a tendency to have his attention too focused on the o-lineman he was engaging and not enough attention on finding the ball, but I have gotten the impression that he is getting better lately at finding the ball more quickly.

It's going to be interesting to see what the team and he decide to do this off season.
