It's a couple of things. The majority of the board did not want him so now they hold it against him. Secondly, he's sucked the majority of his time here. Fans on this board can't separate their bias based on past seasons and how they viewed him in the draft. Unless he puts up undeniable gaudy numbers, those worthy of a first rounder, he'll forever be complete trash in their eyes. Since he was a first rounder there is no in between, he can't just be solid.

Facts are, if we cut him this off-season and he goes on to play like he is now on another team, they'll probably love him(depending on his contract size of course). He's been undeniably solid. Although a bit of a dinosaur, as he is inconsistent at best versus the pass.
They could release this whole team and I wouldn't blame them.

We need more of this kinda Armstead.
A lot of people on this board, and I'll be gentle here, suffer from short memories and an inability to understand context.

I've said it before on this thread, fans need to understand this is the first time in Armstead's career that he has the same scheme, DC and HC for two seasons in his career.

He was used sparingly as a pass rusher under Tomsula in his first year. He then played his first full season in the Jim O'Neal dumpster fire defense but picked up an injury. Both years were a 3-4 but with very different rules.

Last year he was switched to a 4-3 and asked to drop weight and play as an outside rusher - he is not suited to that and he picked up another injury (unlucky).

This is the first time he has had consistency in scheme and coaching for two seasons and even now he's switched position but to a role more natural for him. And he's producing.

Sorry. You dont understand.

AA is the devil. The reason for our teams demise.

Thats all it is. Him. Thats why our team sucks. Because of arik.

We will never be relevant again until he is dead and gone. We should have a shaman around to do the ceremony. Just in case.

Got to show patience - it's true he's been through different coaches and schemes and everything. But, time is running out - he has to show something.

Wow that was really interesting to read. I know he's doing better this year I just feel we can upgrade on him easily. He is having a pretty good year but he won't be worth the money he requires to retain

Nope.

Just drunk.

Have fun debating ariks future with the team.
I say f**k it and let's keep him. At least he's not getting thrown in jail. That is my new criteria for 9er players, which ones do not get thrown in jail.

Don't care either way. 9 mil is alot for him. They won't spend that 9 mil elsewhere so like Jimmy Smith this year you might as well bring him back.
Armstead's problem has always been health more than ability.

If he can stay healthy next year and keep up this level of play (and quite frankly, he could even dip a bit) with the salary cap at 190 he'll be WELL WORTH the 9 million on the 5th year option.

That option is probably best for guys like Armstead and Ward, as you get another year of seeing if they've been unlucky with injuries or just can't stay healthy without making a long term commitment. For Ward the answer is obviously that he just can't stay healthy so the team will be moving on, but if Armstead can stay healthy next year and keep this up I think he's worth keeping in the building long-term.
