Agree. Time to move on from Armstead. Use his money to go get DeMarcus Lawrence & Earl Thomas.

Lawrence will never reach the market.

We have plenty of money to sign Thomas if he wants to join Uncle Sherm in sticking it to the Seahawks for hanging him out to dry with a tag.

There is no financial reason for moving Armstead. If we did we would just have to replace him with someone else. We need him for depth if nothing else.

Good post dj!

If Cards take Bosa - we could take Qwill and trade AA - there are guys like Blair that can step in too
If the Cardinals take Bosa as they should then the team should trade down and pick up as many picks as it can and pick up an area of need then.

I'm good with seeing what Blair can do too. There is no sense in having Armstead being your 4th highest paid player for just "depth" it sends the wrong message to the team in that we'll carry you even if you have been an often injured player that hasn't met expectations of being a former first rounder. Garcon has to go too.

Respectfully disagree.

We don't have any "Impact" guys on D - except for Buck.

IMO, we need difference makers and QWill is an immediate difference maker.

We don't need a bunch of good to average guys from extra picks - we need a violent, aggressive steam-roller to attack and cause havoc.

IMO, QWill is that type of player

I could see Lynch drafting QWill and trading Buck to the Pats.

Aaaaahhhhhh.......what?

No worries...Lynch would rather give birth to Buck's baby before he even CONSIDERS a move like that

As I understand, if he passes a physical by a certain date we could release him with zero implications to the cap and not pay him.
However, he's got a broken hand.... so he can't pass a physical, so he will get paid.

How many coaches has he had on the DL now? Has their been 3 in four years?

Hopefully the newest one they are bringing in will bring out his full potential, WITHOUT him being on IR by the 3rd or 4th game. I know he got through this year, but funny it was his contract year.

We shall see. Haven't heard much about the injury preventing them from moving on

Well if he gets surgery he surly can't oass a physical, and right now he has a broken hand so he can not pass a physical.
Pretty straight forward to me.

It's gonna be a rough year for AA.
Armstead - Garnett - Ward - Tartt.... lets offer them to New England since they have 12 picks or so, and maybe we can a 3rd this year and a 5th next year..

Sounds good. Jacksonville might want to deal with us...they have studs on defense.

must be 3 years ago. nowadays, he's just always late off the snap and knocks his own guys out of the way

No, he is not "always late off the snap." He is on some occasions but not on others. That should tell us that better coaching will correct the problem.

As I said above, if Saleh and Shanahan felt it was an uncorrectable player issue they would not have replaced Zgonina. That move says a lot about what to expect from not only Armstead but Solomon Thomas as well. They are part of the package.
Seems like with the change in D- line coach they are of the impression that that group can improve or do better, I agree. It also seems like Armstead might be retained. If it improves him good for the team. I just question his desire and for me his cap number is too high.

Neither of us knows about his desire. It would seem that the improved year he just put in after overcoming injuries and working with a poor DL coach would suggest his desire is strong.

As to his cap number; it is in line with similar players. His actual salary is less than $3M.
I will always question the desire of guys that perform better in contract years than not. As far as injuries are concerned it is repeatedly stated by players and former players that no one is ever 100% healthy in the NFL guys simply suck it up just play through them.

From the sites I am looking at if he stays on the team for the year his money is $9.046 million. For me that's a lot of money for what he has done.

Hopefully if he stays he will be much better with the new coach.

That is his cap number. It is in line with others at his position based on his play this season. His actual salary is $2,460,000.
Interesting, just to be clear, if he stays on the team the entire year will he have earned $2.46 million or $9.046 million after 2019?

Appreciate it.

It is a function of how his signing bonus is distributed across the total cap. IOW, he was paid a lot up front.
I wish I had more time to understand the cap more. So, which one is it the $2.46 million or $9.046 million?

$2.46M. I was in a hurry this morning to I just bolded the number above.
As much as I have been frustrated with Armstead, I hope we keep him. He had his best season by far and is only 25yrs old. He's turned into a terrific run stopper a perfect BIG End for us IMO. I like the Street kid but he's a rookie coming of a torn ACL so I want to see what he can do first. I'm a big Ronald Blair fan and he could be a solid starter at Big End but he's a TERRIFIC & Versatile back-up

The $2.46 million is base salary from 2015 to 2018. The team since then has pick- up a 5th year option at $9.046 million:

Arik Armstead signed a 4 year, $9,842,630 contract with the San Francisco 49ers, including a $5,418,276 signing bonus, $9,842,630 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2,460,658. In 2018, Armstead will earn a base salary of $1,777,177, while carrying a cap hit of $3,131,746 and a dead cap value of $3,131,746.

Contract Notes:5th year option available
Apr 30 2018 San Francisco (SF) exercised a $9.046 million option for 2019
May 16 2015 Signed a 4 year $9.84 million contract with San Francisco (SF)

Except no one is mentioning that nor has it been confirmed he's having surgery.
The biggest thing no one is talking about is that he's still our starting big end. That's the whole point of a 5th year option, you get another year at a reasonable price to have an extra year to evaluate or work out a deal before losing a 1st round player.

AA hasn't been what we wanted, but he's still a solid starter, he stays.
