Let a guy walk just as he's starting to figure it out over a couple million extra when you have like $80 million in capspace.

If Armstead continues his progression from this past season, he won't have any trouble getting signed by any number of teams next year, especially those running a 3-4.

Its fun to bash on the guy but going through every game this past season, he actually did a good job. He was terrible early on in his career but he's been getting better each year. He'll never be a dominant pass rusher, few guys that play 5 technique exclusively are though. He's developed into a very good run stopper, he and Buckner were pretty much the only parts of the DL that worked last season.

Lol he didn't do anything last year just like he hasn't done anything his entire career. Unless you count celebrating meaningless sacks when the team is down 30 with a belly rub. Paying this dude $9 million, the entire regime should be fired on the spot.

He was the best run defender on the team, slightly better than Buck. Probably top 10 run defender among defensive lineman. If all you do is look at the box score and zero in on sacks then I guess your post makes sense

I was skeptical initially but going through the film of each game, he was one of the few consistent + performers.

He'll never be Justin Smith but he can definitely be a Ray McDonald caliber contributor. McDonald's best year was 38 tackles and 5.5 sacks playing the exact same position. Nobody was complaining about him before the off the field stuff. People just get too attached to their talking points.

It's like people don't understand his role, plus you don't let your second best lineman leave for nothing

Pretty much this. The doom squad is squirming since the old 'he cant make it through 16 games' material fell dead this season lol.

really good at getting blocked = great run stopper.
"...the addition of changing our style a little on the D-line will help him," Kyle Shanahan

THAT is what I'm talking about!

That will help other guys like Thomas to fulfill the promise all the draft experts saw in him.

Of course that goes against the grain of the narrative about Kyle not being willing to make changes to fit the personnel he has, but...whatever.

I'm half glass full on Armstead, but at his size, that's all he needs to do to be decent against the run.
Before last year, he was freestyling like
I wish we could get some details. 49ers.com quoted Shanny saying AA will play outside in base and inside nickel, but he already did that this season.

They probably wont know for sure until the draft and FA plays out. BE on base downs seems obvious, nobody in the draft or FA are better than AA on running downs for the BE position. Plus Lynch drafted enough BE's by now. If, and it's a big if, they can land a couple of decent edge rushers then there should be no need to play AA outside on passing downs.

Truth.

Armstead - 78.3 #14 among EDs.

Buckner - 76.2
