The main thing with trading Armstead, is freeing up that 9 extra million for us to use in FA. There are a lot of game changers available right now in FA, and I would rather pay bigger money to guys like Earl Thomas-C.J. Mosley-Justin Houston, or guys like that, who could really help our D out going forward, compared to someone like AA, who is a BE for us, and not much else.

One can only hope. For as "solid" as AA has become, I honestly don't see much better than what we saw this season. His skillset seems perfect for a 3-4 defense. The salary AA will get this year is almost as much as it would take to sign a one of those difference makers KS and JL have been talking about.
I agree that Armstead makes more sense to a team running a 3-4, and has more value to a team like that, compared to us. I know for a fact that Thomas+Mosley would help our D out tremendously, and Mosley is a guy who could be here 5+ years easily, so he is not just a short term fix, Thomas will still be elite for 2-3 more years, and then begin his decline.

I just don't like paying A 9+ million for what he brings to the table.

Niners run a hybrid 3-4

Don't be fooled by the 4-3 moniker, the weak side end is basically a olb. That's why the big end is so important in this scheme, you can't be weak there and succeed

What does the word "positive " mean in your dictionary?

i hope doc is paying attention here. mods should not be allowed to bait posters

Incredible. So in your view I am not even allowed to reference the fact that susweel is absolutely not a positive poster. Well, my post is not baiting but your accusation is noted although it is unjustified.

When I read it thought you were being funny lol
Hopefully we get someone better and he can rotate in.

It's a 4-3. There is almost always 4 guys with their hand in the dirt, defo, aa, solly, Marsh, Blair, etc.

Would you be happy if he received "only" $5-7M?

It really isn't a matter of cap space because we have plenty of that.

The point is, we know Kyle Shanahan was not satisfied with Zgonina as DL, hence he was replaced by Kocurek. That should tell us that Kyle believes Armstead, along with Thomas, can be much better with a better coach. After all, there were not a lot of good choices for DL because of how late KS was hired. So giving those guys time to work on things would make more sense than trading for a mid-round choice who will not likely be as good as Armstead is right now.

Patience is hard, but look at the signals. Kyle is just as dissatisfied with the defense as we were (or maybe some of us were).
We must cut AA or dont sign him please!!

My understanding is that we can still cut him on/before June 1st, no?

F**k it just let him play out the season, we have the cap. Then just let him walk, he can at least stop the run
I know many of you are very frustrated with Armstead (part of which may be spill over from being frustrated with Thomas) but the fact is that Armstead is very good against the run and still has good potential. I think the guy is 25 years old...still too soon to call a bust IMHO and he was very solid this past year.

He does need some coaching with his technique but he has matured. I've heard some players say that he is an absolute beast on some plays but is just inconsistent. Well, he was good enough for the NIners to give him $9 million this year so they must think he can be worth that. I think the team just doesn't want him to go to another team and then blossom there. He may never be a star but it sounds like he can be even better this year, which would make him valuable. Just my two cents.

Cheers!
AA's cap number just doesn't matter at the moment, it's a one year prove it deal and isn't stopping us making any moves.

I think whether he gets re-signed has more to do with the growth of Taylor and emergence of Street than it does AA.

One of those kids have to take his job, or we have to start coming up against the cap, otherwise he stays, he's really good against the run, and usually gets a push, with Ford around that might be enough.
