yeah, 3 concussions in 16 months. not a big deal.

Last year everyone said we did not need an ILB when we took Borland...turns out we did and he was one of our best players on D. (que the corny jokes about Baalke knowing player X is next to retire ). Baalke has a plan and knows our needs that pertain to what our coordinators plan to do scheme wise better than any of us.
Also go ahead and rewatch the first Cards game from last year. Given they were so thin at ILB, Bowles schemed a heap of 4 safety looks to beat us. This kid could compete to play in nickle and dime as a rook and help on ST's in year one, and teams tend to play about 60% of their defensive snaps in nickle nowadays. Anxious to hear Baalke speak on this pick and what they have in mind exactly...might not be what Bowles did in week 3 but obviously they saw something they liked.
Also to those who claim reach or could have had later...those are assumptions. No one knows what other teams are thinking or what their boards look like.
First off let me say this, I was excited about Chris Borland and at the very least I thought would be a solid ILB on goal line situations or to mix him in on 1st and 2nd downs. As for drafting Tartt, IMO I think Baalke slipped up on this one, I think they need more pure CB's on defense rather than Safeties. Jimmie Ward and Dontae Johnson could both step in at Safety, I don't see Tartt stepping in at CB. Second, I think NT is definitely a need and BPA in Carl Davis who can play both inside and outside.

There is always one guy in a draft that I watch closely the next year to see if I still wish we had drafted them. A couple of years ago it was:
Alshon Jeffrey - he's good, but not that bummed we didn't get him
Kelvin Benjamin - to me, this was a major bummer, he played great in 2014 and I think will be a stud for years. He makes the QB look good with his tough catches
This year it will definitely be DGB - with so much boom or bust potential it should be good to watch :)

I'll repost:
Essentially what this allows us to do on passing downs is keep Johnson at outside CB for press coverage (doesn't have to shift over to the slot to cover bigger TE/WR's now), take either Bowman or Wilhoite off the field in coverage and sub him in and allow Ward to roam the slot as well in passing downs. He'll play a hybrid Chancellor-role and ST's for us right now and grow into the SS position...just like Ward with Slot CB-to-FS should something happen to Reid (concussions).
We just got some insight into Mangini's defense.
PS: This is a great idea with Bowman's knee and Wilhoite's weakness in coverage.

Might be a good idea to rewatch the senior bowl game/practices. Apparently killed it there.

Although Tartt primarily played free safety in college, his NFL projection is strong safety as an aggressive in-the-box tone setter. He's drawn some comparisons to Kam Chancellor. Tartt has a chance to become an eventual starting strong safety. He's the heir apparent to SS Antoine Bethea in San Francisco.

future starter
So I guess this means we spent last years 1st rounder for a back up to the previous years 1st rounder Reid. I know the kid can play but that makes two 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder at safety in the last 2 years along with signing Bethea who is playing well.
With all of our other needs it seems like overkill.
What does this mean for Jimmy Ward's future? He's not a real nickel CB.

@nfldraftscout: If your favorite team needs a strong safety in Round 2, Jaquiski Tartt is your man. Better get him early, though. He won't last long.
He even nailed SF making the pick. Nice job...

I still believe jimmie can be that rangy free safety. The team might have other plans for him. But he would excel in that spot IMO.
