- Reads quarterbacks and flashes ability to jump routes
- Flashes good route recognition and feel for route combinations

- Length and range to cover deep half
- Flashes ability to deliver big hit in coverage
- Length and enough speed to run with tight ends down the seam
- Good transition out of pedal and flashes ability to limit production after catch in off man

- Wide catching radius
- Tracks ball well facing the line of scrimmage.
- Times jumps well and flashes ability to high-point

- Frame, strength and length to develop into an effective in-the-box safety
- Aggressive
- Flashes above-average stopping power

Charles Davis Take

An absolute missile at the Safety position with SEC skill-set

Mike Mayock´s Take

Tartt showed up at the Senior Bowl with an attitude. He is a big-bodied thumper, and more athletic than given credit for. The question is, what is his coverage skill set.

ESPN´s Take

He has the length and speed to excel in zone coverage and cover tight ends in man-to-man, and he flashes the ability to deliver the big hit. He can be a good run defender and playmaker against the half.

Tartt has excellent upside and new defensive coordinator Eric Mangini should have time to bring him along without asking too much of him early on.

lol

We ain't drafting starters for this season. These dimwits don't know Trent. We future proofing

we were 8-8 last year we better be drafting some starters lol
I can see us racking up on a few LBs with our mid round picks. Some scrapers football players who can also contribute on special teams. Mix in an OG and WR and we are good to go.

We drafted him at NCB not FS

But to say Ward isn't a Safety is absurd, Ward can line up anywhere in the secondary.

First off let me say this, I was excited about Chris Borland and at the very least I thought would be a solid ILB on goal line situations or to mix him in on 1st and 2nd downs. As for drafting Tartt, IMO I think Baalke slipped up on this one, I think they need more pure CB's on defense rather than Safeties. Jimmie Ward and Dontae Johnson could both step in at Safety, I don't see Tartt stepping in at CB. Second, I think NT is definitely a need and BPA in Carl Davis who can play both inside and outside.

i am thinking, hoping they do go corner in the third

There's still a ton of good CB's left that could step right in and make an impact IMHO.

Alex Carter Stanford
Doran Grant Ohio St.
Steven Nelson Oregon St.
Ladarius Gunter Miami
Quinten Rollins Miami (OH)
Gary Peters Clemson
Damian Swann Georgia
PJ Williams Florida St.
Josh Shaw USC
Kevin White TCU
of course there are,, there are also some wide outs still out there,,,i should be used to it but it just kills me the way people carry on when the niners draft a player they disagree with. i do not question trent after last year when he got those two linebackers we needed,,,,,, and you KNOW damn well, the people screaming for trents head are the SAME people who would screaming at him should eric go down and we have to play dahl,,, for not addressing this possible problem in the draft... i like this kind of pro active thinking,,, plus as you said,,, the holes we THINK are there can still be filled,,, this is a marathon and not a sprint

Perceived needs.

True. I've calmed down watch some highlights and read up on him, seems a lot of teams like him.
I dont see how versatile dbs is a bad thing. I prefer versatile players.

i see your point but remember we have signed three backers including a nice one in wheeler yesterday and the one guy we got from the jets is a great special teams player,, i would like to see a cb, a wr and a og but with our tradition,,,,, i would certainly not be upset with your theory

its called roster manipulation- He isnt a S. You should come to terms with that now while the off season still sucks.
Also, i know its been said but, anyone saying S isnt a need has really no clue what they are talking about. I will give you three reasons why its a huge need.

1.Reid is one or two head injury's away from retirement. I don't care where the kid is from, if he ends up with another concussion or two this next season, he will likely be advised by everyone he knows to retire. Kid is very close to having to call it a career IMO.

2. Ward is not a starting FS IMO, and he sure as hell is not a SS. He is a NCB/S hybrid. That's never going to change.

3. Bethea is old.

What!!

Ward lines up on the slot WR,. basically he is a nickle corner. He might be listed on the depth chart as a S but thats not what he does. Reid isnt a SS and either is Ward (if you want tto think of him as a safety) which he isnt because he covers the slot like a CB. Which is also why we wont be drafting a CB early because he drafted 2 that never played last year.

Great point Reid would be better at FS, the we could have Tartt at SS while Jimmy will be our swiss army knife.

Nor how we plan to use them. They are worse than many of our own fans.

Yup! We've assumed we've had all these holes but you've told us for months now that we don't. Fans just don't see it that way though

And I'm just going to keep reposting this until a few back off from the ledge:

Essentially what this allows us to do on passing downs is keep Johnson at outside CB for press coverage (doesn't have to shift over to the slot to cover bigger TE/WR's now), take either Bowman or Wilhoite off the field in coverage and sub Tartt in and allow Ward to roam the slot as well in passing downs. He'll play a hybrid Chancellor-role and ST's for us right now and grow into the SS position...just like Ward with Slot CB-to-FS should something happen to Reid (concussions). This is a great idea with Bowman's knee and Wilhoite's weakness in coverage. We just got some insight into Mangini's defense.

plus do you really want to go through a situation where dahl would see extended time? good pro active signing. i think we could afford to do this simply because we do not have a GLARING need, in my opinion in the wide out, cb, linebacker or o line.. yes we need some quality players but in my opinion,, they can still be had tonight or saturday. i like the three backers we signed plus bowman and michael,,,,,, i like the young guys we have back on the o lline,, and yes i like the collection of guys we have in the secondary... i like the wide outs we have,, it is pathetic we still do not know what our two young wide outs have but thats a whole other story ... one more player at each one of those spots tonight or tomorrow and we are set,, in my opinion
