They more likely reasoned that Bethea may retire soon, Reid would make a good tandem, but could be medically forced into retirement, Ward coming up similarly is a positive, and he can still contribute even with all of them at full go.

Yup! We've assumed we've had all these holes but you've told us for months now that we don't. Fans just don't see it that way though
And I'm just going to keep reposting this until a few back off from the ledge:
Essentially what this allows us to do on passing downs is keep Johnson at outside CB for press coverage (doesn't have to shift over to the slot to cover bigger TE/WR's now), take either Bowman or Wilhoite off the field in coverage and sub Tartt in and allow Ward to roam the slot as well in passing downs. He'll play a hybrid Chancellor-role and ST's for us right now and grow into the SS position...just like Ward with Slot CB-to-FS should something happen to Reid (concussions). This is a great idea with Bowman's knee and Wilhoite's weakness in coverage. We just got some insight into Mangini's defense.
The only problem is if Reid stays healthy we drafted Ward in the 1st round as a back up FS and an underachieving NCB which really isn't his forte. Tartt looks like a good prospect but two 1st rounders and a mid 2nd rounder at the safety position in 3 years is a lot of draft capital.
I guess we will see in august/september if we are a deep team with no holes to fill and we are just adding BPA in this draft or if maybe there were some holes we might have tried to fill in the draft.
I am actually less worried about Tartt justifying his draft position than I am about Ward, especially with Tartt coming in.
It's more about scheme and HOW we used Ward. Last year we used him a lot in trail-mode and that's not his strength esp. when he wasn't healthy. He's more of a pure FS where he excels when the action is happening in from of him and he can utilize his talents/speed/play making ability. Tartt is going to be our Kam Chancellor in our big (nickel) sets on passing downs.
--------------- Eli Harold --------------- Darnell Dockett --------------- Arik Armstead --------------- Aldon Smith -------------------------
------------------------------------------------------- Navarro Bowman --------------- Jaquiski Tartt -------------------------------------------------
Tramaine Brock -------------- Antoine Bethea ---------------- Eric Reid --------------- Jimmie Ward ---------------- Dontae Johnson
Endless combinations here. You can also pull Bowman completely off the field and add another DB and allow Tartt to be that lone MIKE (like how we used to use Bowman). Or go a 3-man DL.
Hopefully Mangini uses Ward better this year and he can continue to grow into the slot CB for us and back up Reid at FS should he ever get hurt. It could very well end up being Tartt (SS) and Ward (FS) back there some day. Baalke is not going to be blindsided by another concussion-retirement.
There are a lot of things we can do on defense most of which are not dependant upon having Jimmy Ward on the roster. Depth is great but we now have spent 1st and 2nd round picks for depth at safety and from what we saw last year we have no depth at TE and might not even have a starter. Kid looks like a good player and that is the most important thing. As long as we pick good players what positions we draft is of secondary concern. I would rather get a terrific back up safety than a WR bust.
I am just not as sure as Baalke that we are set at TE, Back-up OT, Guard with Thomas coming off major injury, WR behind Torrey Smith our only vertical threat and of course ILB with Willis and Borland gone. Baalke seems to think we are fine at those positions so I guess we should give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he is right.

I agree corner was a bigger need, but which corner would you have taken instead? I didn't think their was any staring caliber corners left after Collins was drafed.Originally posted by Kolohe:First off let me say this, I was excited about Chris Borland and at the very least I thought would be a solid ILB on goal line situations or to mix him in on 1st and 2nd downs. As for drafting Tartt, IMO I think Baalke slipped up on this one, I think they need more pure CB's on defense rather than Safeties. Jimmie Ward and Dontae Johnson could both step in at Safety, I don't see Tartt stepping in at CB. Second, I think NT is definitely a need and BPA in Carl Davis who can play both inside and outside.
Also, you think NT was a greater need than S? Dorsey, Williams, and Dial and TJE both have played and had successful snaps there. We are 1 play away from having Craig "F" Dahl as a starter or one less CB which you said is our greatest need.
I don't mind the pick. Of all the players on te team that I wanted replaced, Dahl was #1.

You really think these guys are a significant upgrade over who we already have? I definitly think Tart is an upgrade over Dahl an Mcray. Now we are at least 2 deep at both safety positions. Plus, we could still get some of these guys, where as if someone took tart, the cupboard would be bare at Saftey.Originally posted by Kolohe:There's still a ton of good CB's left that could step right in and make an impact IMHO.

It also tells me we have confidence in our depth at CB which I have thought all along, Reaser and Acker are obviously well thought of and we have Brock, Cook and Wright as weLl. We have a deep CB pool with potential.
Or we don't have confidence in the remaining corners.

No. I liked the Arik Armstead pick. I like the Eli Harold pick. I hate drafting 3 safeties HIGH 3 straight years. Its idiotic and you know it.
Does IND 1st round pick mean they think Hilton, Johnson, and Moncreef are busts? Or maybe they just like depth and to strengthen positions with the BPA.

SANTA CLARA – The fact the 49ers have chosen defensive players with each of their first three draft picks counts only as a mild surprise.
But the 49ers have yet to add players at cornerback or inside linebacker, the two position seen as the team's largest defensive needs entering the draft.
The 49ers selected Samford safety Jaquiski Tartt in the second round (No. 46 overall) after drafting safeties Eric Reid and Jimmie Ward in the first round the previous two years.
"In every sport, one thing that's common is you stay strong up the middle," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said Friday night. "I've said that many times. Why did we take him? Best player on our board at the time. I've maintained for a long time we're going to go with the board and he was the best player on the board."
In fact, Baalke said the 49ers had an opportunity to trade back to acquire more picks. But even though Tartt expected to be drafted in the third or fourth round, Baalke said he did not want to take any chances of losing him.
"We almost made a move to trade back a few spots and just decided with the lack of safeties on our board and where he stood on our board at the time, it was too much of a risk to trade back, so we hung tight," Baalke said.
Baalke said he envisions Tartt as a four-down player. He will probably have a difficult time getting on the field for the first three downs as a rookie with Reid and Antoine Bethea firmly entrenched at the top of the depth chart. But Tartt is expected to immediately become one of the team's best players on special teams.
The selection of Tartt prompted questions about the 49ers' concern over the health of Reid and Ward.
Reid has sustained three concussions in his first two seasons. Ward was recovering from surgery to repair a foot fracture a year ago when the 49ers drafted him. He is currently rehabbing from a re-fracture of the same foot that he sustained during a midseason game at New Orleans. But Baalke said there was no correlation between the selection of Tartt and any worries the 49ers might have about their previous first-round draft picks.
"I wouldn't say that that played a role in it," Baalke said. "Obviously, we're confident in both of those guys being able to stay healthy and play football for us and (we're) very high on their ability. This pick had nothing to do with those players, the current players on our roster. It just had everything to do with the quality of player that we thought we were getting at that pick."
In the third round, the 49ers added Virginia linebacker Eli Harold, who was projected as a second-round draft pick. Harold joins a 49ers' position group that includes Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Aaron Lynch and Corey Lemonier.
"You can never have too many guys that can rush the passer," Baalke said. "I think that's proven. The more guys you can lineup on the edge or within different packages, we may build a package for those guys. I would look for that potentially. But that's up to the defensive coaches to put these guys in a position to make plays."
The 49ers have seven scheduled draft picks on Saturday.
