1 day later and I'm still mad. Did the door hit him on the way out?

Fair enough. I just want someone dynamic in our secondary. Dashon Goldson would have made that play. If we get a good upgrade at secondary and interior oline and Trey plays how we all know he can, we're back in the nfc championship again next year
Dashon Goldson is the most romanticized safety the Niners had over the last 20 years. Dude was worse than Tartt or Ward in coverage.
He was inconsistent but he is more of a playmaker than ward and tartt combined. He had more highlights than both of them.

If the price is reasonable, he should stay. He and Ward are BFF's, both generally played well throughout the season and if you're going to have to fill in a bunch of needs through the draft as well as give big money extensions to guys already on the roster, you could do far worse than Tartt. CB was the main issue in the secondary, not safety.

He also whiffed and gave up more big plays than Ward and Tartt combined. I remember him getting yelled at by Whitner because of how often he'd freelance and get out of position. That came back to bite the 49ers in many big games.
Once they started legislating the big hits out of the game, he just became a free safety that struggled in coverage, was prone to missing tackles and committed a lot of penalties.

I couldn't see the 49ers bringing back Kyle Williams after the nightmare NFC Championship game in 2011. I thought Tartt was supposed to be the enforcer when he started out. He's injured so much and his dropped gift cost a shot at the SB. Dump him.

lol, are we really comparing a guy dropping an interception that in no way guaranteed that the 49ers would hold on to win the game considering how their offense was looking versus a guy who botched two punt returns that led to the Giants scoring both times?

It's so tough to get to the SB, when the time comes and you can't make the play, how long will it take to get back there again. Send a message that if you can't step up at the most crucial time we'll find someone that can. Plus the main point, he's expendable.

There's no guarantee that you're going to bring someone in that's better than him. Its not like this team doesn't have more pressing needs in other areas and a limited amount of cap space and draft picks to fill them with. He's played well enough as a starter for them to reach a conference championship game and a Superbowl. Tartt is far from the biggest issue on the roster and as long as the price is reasonable, I can't see why you wouldn't bring him back.

Tartt is an ok player but he can definitely be upgraded.
It's also time to move on from Ward. He's a liability.

Switch players and I agree. Ward is ok and tartt is a liability.

Ward and Tartt are a good tandem....not exactly playmakers and models of health...but when they're both out there, it's a very good duo.
Tartts drop is gonna sting for a lot of people for a looonnggg time.

I get that but there was 9 minutes left in the game. The offense did absolutely nothing with multiple possessions but suddenly Tarttt coming down with the ball on the 49ers 30 yard line was going to be the difference between winning and losing? I don't buy it. He should have caught it but overall the defense held the Rams to 20 points. You should win that game every time.

Oh I'm not saying he dropped a Super Bowl trip....I agree with everything you said, but a turnover at that time is a massive game changing/momentum type play. It could've easily sparked the Niners and or sunk the Rams' spirits.
My comments were more directly towards how good of a duo Ward and Tartt were...especially since they had to cover up deficiencies in the secodary with the corner play for a good chunk of the season.
