You really think these guys are a significant upgrade over who we already have? I definitly think Tart is an upgrade over Dahl an Mcray. Now we are at least 2 deep at both safety positions. Plus, we could still get some of these guys, where as if someone took tart, the cupboard would be bare at Saftey.

Significant upgrade, well you could argue that with Brock and Cook both coming off injuries along with Keith Reaser who is not only coming off an injury but a question mark as well. Who do the 9ers have at CB who is a clear cut solid starter:

Tramaine Brock - Had a shaky season last year but injuries had a big factor

Shareece Wright - Not even toast gets more burnt than him

Dontae Johnson - I love his potential but I don't think he's ready to start yet

Chris Cook - Showed promise but he is coming off a nasty hamstring tear that put him on IR, hamstrings are a lingering thing

Keith Reaser - A supposedly solid CB, but we shall see coming off of injury, 2015 will be his real rookie season

Kenneth Acker - Both Acker and Reaser are question marks compared to any CB drafted

Then you go Training Camp/Preseason CB's

Marcus Cromartie

Leon McFadden

I wouldn't count on them being anything other than depth to practice squad players

A very shaky group of CB's with no Ed Donatell.

Yes that is a very shaky group. I feel they are going all in on Johnson and hoping he steps up. I don't see how he's ready though. He has at least another yr of coming off the bench IMO. Hell he showed that st the end of the yr. he needs to hone his skills.
But the depth.... Ouch
Like my uncle use to say, "opinions are like butt-holes, everyone has one and most of them stink."

Jaquiski Tartt, S, 49ers (No. 46): Circling back to that whole drop-off-after-Landon-Collins topic ...

That Tartt was the third safety off the board (depending on how Jalen Collins is classified) was not that shocking. It was unexpected to see it happen this early, and by a team that does not have an obvious need at safety. Making it even more intriguing moving forward: Philadelphia traded up to select CB/S Eric Roweone pick after Tartt heard his name called. If Rowe pans out as Tartt scuffles for playing time, San Francisco could be second-guessing this one.Read more at http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/182250-welcome-newest-49ers-jaquiski-tartt/page20/#SOq9RAP00ScKPKYl.99

Edit: at 221 pounds I wonder if there is any though of converting this kid to ILB? He might not have great cover skills as a DB, but it would be considered more than good for a LB. Just a thought.

See the Baalke thread and latest transcript for your answer.
Jaquiski Tartt is a name straight out of 'Key & Peele', lol. I hope he turns out to be good for the 49ers.

Great read. Thanks!

Sounds like converting to LB is a definite no go, but kind of like I suspected, he'll be used as a LB in the dime or maybe to cover TEs in the nickle, like Willis did (guessing).

Can't believe he runs a 4.4 at his size. This dude is going to be dangerous.

I have very good visions of 2016 with Reid at FS, Tartt at SS and Ward in the slot.
I guess this locks jimmy ward into a CB position somewhere. I remember talk of Jimmy Ward as a SS or FS. This new kid fills that role. Baalke must of seen something last year I didn't because I remember Jimmy getting used up until he was injured.

I see Johnson and Brock emerging as the starters with either Ward, Reiser or Acker as the nickle.

This pick is growing on me the more I think about it.

You don't draft for their replacement in the 2nd though....I don't get this pick AT ALL a head scratcher for sure.

MM wasn't lying that we wouldn't get any 2015 starters from this draft, but 2016 might be a different story. I would have loved Strong instead....
So we can't draft a back up Safety in the 2nd but we can draft a back up Wr?

You bet. He's going to be a huge weapon for us...he seems as quick as he is fast. He gets up to top speed instantly and closes as quickly as I've seen and THEN he hits "through" players. THAT is a tone-setter right there. Yeah Wilson, throw a high ball to Graham. I dare you!

All that!

I agree, but how many from your list are a clear upgrade from what we have? Or were you just hoping to increase the odds of hitting on one of them? Maybe, Baalke has a lower grade on the CBs in this class than you do and thus didn't want to reach for one, just because it was an area of need.

niners didn't select rowe because he plays nickel cb/s.. that same position that jimmie ward plays.

Which I don't get when people complain that the 49ers are drafting backups, any WR they chose would not have been a starter this season either.

Fair "concerns" but we only need 2 starters and Brock, Johnson, Wright, Cook, etc. are proven starters in this league. Brock and Johnson are proven very good CB's on OUR team. I expect the same from Wright and Cook HERE in OUR scheme.

And make no bones about it, Wright, Cook, McFadden (played very well for us last year), Cromartie and Acker and Reaser are going to push Brock and Johnson VERY hard. Those two spots are wide open and whoever wins there is going to have a terrific year for us...just like 100 other combinations of CB's we've used over the years of "shaky" CB's. Shaky DB's who've gone on to earn huge pay days in FA only to be never heard from again.

i like the tandem of brock and johnson as long as they stay healthy. throw the rooks, reaser and acker, in there and we've got a nice nucleus of young, talented players.

I still remember the shock I was in when Haley was announcing the pick...I thought it was a joke when he was pronouncing his name. I was like, wtf, who the hell is he talking about...

But I'm all in with Tartt! I wanted us to select Deon Buchanon last year, Tartt is better.
