Robert Quinn, of the Rams, drafted 14th overall in the 2011 draft has proven to be an excellent player, but his first year was not very good. (23 tackles and 5 sacks).

We should at least give Ward another year before.............

I'm completely with you. The number of posts around here calling guys like Ward a bust, or demanding that Vance get cut now that we drafted a couple talented rookies, is surprising to say the least.

Ward can stay at CB? he is f**king garbage at cb. did he make one decent play in the regular season last year? i honestly can't remember him doing anything decent. he won't be on our team in 2 years and if he gets any meaningful time at CB this year that means our CB's are god awful and we are in trouble

LOL, you figured all that out after less than half a season by watching an injured rookie shifting to a new position.....s**t, with analytical skills like that, you should be working in the NFL.

Jaquiski Tartt - S - San Francisco 49ers Scouting Report

Tartt has almost 30 pounds on Ward so they are very different players. Tartt, Ward and Reid are all 23 years old and if Reid can overcome his concussion problem this position may be a strength for years to come. High character guys who will be almost interchangable...though Tartt will be the greatest thumper.

he got torched the next week too by a fellow no-name rookie in arizona. there is no narrative. he played like absolute garbage, well below average even for a rookie. in that same game, another rookie CB on the bears made a game changing interception.

as for him being injured... ok? everyone is injured in some way. no excuses. maybe he will improve this year and i would love to eat crow but he showed me absolutely nothing last year, not even a glimmer of hope so i'm not expecting anything from him

I could have sworn those plays were broken down and it was on Reid biting on the play action and subsequently being out of position to provide over the top coverage on Brown. I may be thinking of the wrong play though. Ward didn't pay great but I can see the potential.

This is correct, but people will see whichever CB is closest and tag him as the goat in the play. It was Reid that blew his assignment making Ward look bad.
You guys are trippen. Same people bashing Tartt right now will have his Jersey in a couple yrs. he's gonna be a great player.

That is exactly what happened but the mob already has their pitchforks out and the narrative is already spun.

Can't wait. He'll be our Cam Chancellor
I think Tartt would be very effective in the dime with Wilhoite coming out.

I'm excited for this pick. Unfortunately, I can't help but think he would be an amazing pick 10 years ago. With the new NFL rules, his biggest strength may easily backfire.

agree but his highlight tape the hits were legal but I get ur point anything that looks too violent refs will flag it. But, did the NFL make penalty calls reviewable?

Nor how we plan to use them. They are worse than many of our own fans.

Yup! We've assumed we've had all these holes but you've told us for months now that we don't. Fans just don't see it that way though

And I'm just going to keep reposting this until a few back off from the ledge:

Essentially what this allows us to do on passing downs is keep Johnson at outside CB for press coverage (doesn't have to shift over to the slot to cover bigger TE/WR's now), take either Bowman or Wilhoite off the field in coverage and sub Tartt in and allow Ward to roam the slot as well in passing downs. He'll play a hybrid Chancellor-role and ST's for us right now and grow into the SS position...just like Ward with Slot CB-to-FS should something happen to Reid (concussions). This is a great idea with Bowman's knee and Wilhoite's weakness in coverage. We just got some insight into Mangini's defense.

The only problem is if Reid stays healthy we drafted Ward in the 1st round as a back up FS and an underachieving NCB which really isn't his forte. Tartt looks like a good prospect but two 1st rounders and a mid 2nd rounder at the safety position in 3 years is a lot of draft capital.

I guess we will see in august/september if we are a deep team with no holes to fill and we are just adding BPA in this draft or if maybe there were some holes we might have tried to fill in the draft.

I am actually less worried about Tartt justifying his draft position than I am about Ward, especially with Tartt coming in.

It's more about scheme and HOW we used Ward. Last year we used him a lot in trail-mode and that's not his strength esp. when he wasn't healthy. He's more of a pure FS where he excels when the action is happening in from of him and he can utilize his talents/speed/play making ability. Tartt is going to be our Kam Chancellor in our big (nickel) sets on passing downs.

--------------- Eli Harold --------------- Darnell Dockett --------------- Arik Armstead --------------- Aldon Smith -------------------------

------------------------------------------------------- Navarro Bowman --------------- Jaquiski Tartt -------------------------------------------------

Tramaine Brock -------------- Antoine Bethea ---------------- Eric Reid --------------- Jimmie Ward ---------------- Dontae Johnson

Endless combinations here. You can also pull Bowman completely off the field and add another DB and allow Tartt to be that lone MIKE (like how we used to use Bowman). Or go a 3-man DL.

Hopefully Mangini uses Ward better this year and he can continue to grow into the slot CB for us and back up Reid at FS should he ever get hurt. It could very well end up being Tartt (SS) and Ward (FS) back there some day. Baalke is not going to be blindsided by another concussion-retirement.

Can you imagine a Nascar package that involves 3-to-4 DE/OLBs running stunts and speed-rushes?

Aldon Smith
Aaron Lynch
Ahmad Brooks
Eli Harold

3rd-and-Long will be our strength this year

And don't forget a monster pass rush inside with Carradine and Dockett! Bombs away!

Why would Arik Armstead be on the field in a nickel package? His strength is 2-gapping and not pass rushing. And Eli Harold over Lynch? No way. Lynch has earned his spot.

Tartt is best suited playing a robber safety role; he's not a LB, he's a roaming robber safety ala Kam Chancellor. I think the safety tandem of Tartt and Jimmie complement each other sooo well. Jimmie is built for that single high coverage with Tartt as the underneath robber.
