He was blind to scrawny aj Jenkins considerable physical limitations. Then he turned around did the same with ward, another scrawny guy with mediocre nfl athleticism.

Lack of nfl size must be accompanied by extraordinary football athleticism in order to thrive.

Ward has mediocre nfl athleticism and a lightly muscled frame. Same as aj Jenkins.

Tartt 6'1" 221
Ward 5'11" 193
Reid 6'1" 213

None of these guys are scrawny! You're knocking a guy who played injured as a rookie? Why?

From NFL scout on Ward:
"Intense, active and energetic. Zooms around the field and stands out on tape. Aggressive run supporter -- triggers quickly, flies downhill and chops down ball carriers. Breaks on throws and shows short-area burst to close. Has quick hands to snatch interceptions. Confident and energetic. Experienced and productive. Has a 38-inch vertical jump."

On injury shortened year under his belt...lets not paint the kid with the bust brush just yet eh?

I think this is a reach. No major candidates at safety with more exposure to NFL sized players? I see highlights against Mercer and Wofford. It will be an adjustment for this into the pros, and that will take time. Was this guy really going off the board in the second round if we didn't take him. Also, I am a little surprised NC that you have penciled in Harold above over Lynch. Why?

I had to just throw out the not ready yet complaint. By and large it seems none of this draft after the top ten is ready and even some of those guys are debatable. It just wasn't a year where you were going to land year one starters according to the draft pros, so our front office went with potential and scheme fit. It bugged me at first but now I have settled into that fact and I am getting more optimistic about a lot of these kids.

What I highlighted above is a projected nickel/dime package. One that we'll see a lot. It's a way to get Wilhoite off the field on passing downs (or when the offense goes to 3-4 WR sets)...a way to get Tartt and Harold and Armstead in the games and develop. Also, a way to get Dockett in as well. Endless possibilities with this personnel now....for instance, you can use your two best interior pass rushers in Tank and Dockett along with any combination of Brooks/Lynch and Aldon/Harold outside them. It's also a way to get two playmakers on the field in Ward and Tartt in the middle of the field with Reid patrolling as well...plus lighten the load on Bowman.

Edit: at 221 pounds I wonder if there is any though of converting this kid to ILB? He might not have great cover skills as a DB, but it would be considered more than good for a LB. Just a thought.

See the Baalke thread and latest transcript for your answer.
Great read. Thanks!

Sounds like converting to LB is a definite no go, but kind of like I suspected, he'll be used as a LB in the dime or maybe to cover TEs in the nickle, like Willis did (guessing).

Can't believe he runs a 4.4 at his size. This dude is going to be dangerous.

I have very good visions of 2016 with Reid at FS, Tartt at SS and Ward in the slot.
If I got it right, we don't need to convert him. In today's NFL slot receivers are used quite often so that the nickel defense is becoming more and more important and can be designated as a base defense sooner or later.
Every team has to react to that, i.e. they have to get a guy who can deal with RBs but also with TEs and slot WRs, kind of a SS-ILB-tweener. Tartt seems to be a perfect fit for this description. He played a lot against slot receivers, he looks very physical on tape and carries 221 pounds around (Bethea is just at 206) and as a SS he certainly played against RBs and TEs as well.

It's more about scheme and HOW we used Ward. Last year we used him a lot in trail-mode and that's not his strength esp. when he wasn't healthy. He's more of a pure FS where he excels when the action is happening in from of him and he can utilize his talents/speed/play making ability. Tartt is going to be our Kam Chancellor in our big (nickel) sets on passing downs.

--------------- Eli Harold --------------- Darnell Dockett --------------- Arik Armstead --------------- Aldon Smith -------------------------

------------------------------------------------------- Navarro Bowman --------------- Jaquiski Tartt -------------------------------------------------

Tramaine Brock -------------- Antoine Bethea ---------------- Eric Reid --------------- Jimmie Ward ---------------- Dontae Johnson

Endless combinations here. You can also pull Bowman completely off the field and add another DB and allow Tartt to be that lone MIKE (like how we used to use Bowman). Or go a 3-man DL.

Hopefully Mangini uses Ward better this year and he can continue to grow into the slot CB for us and back up Reid at FS should he ever get hurt. It could very well end up being Tartt (SS) and Ward (FS) back there some day. Baalke is not going to be blindsided by another concussion-retirement.

No A.Lynch? To me the Nastiest MFer the 49ers GOT

If this is our pass defense base using Tartt and a nickel linebacker, this is the only way I see him seeing the field.

I also think Caradine and Justin Smith if he returns would go inside over Armstead and maybe Docket as they provide us better pass rush.

This is more of a 3d and long defensive set though or something to use against an empty backfield.

He look pretty good in the Auburn game (even though I think this was the game he got hurt in but still played) he was laying the wood in the Arkansas game as well.

I really like the prospect.... he's our Kam/Whiter enforcer that we need in the NFC West, Jimmy "softy" Graham wasn't happy about this pick

agreed I think his best spot is FS where he can used his speed/anticipation to be a ball-hawk.

it is so funny that i was stomping around for 15 minutes after this pick, pissed at the world and ready to join verb and sus in the mob,,, then i took into account things, that we have already discussed,, and i then understood why they made the pick and why it makes perfect sense, both short term and long term. i really really hate to rag on our players cuz they are niners but if this means dahl can be cut, that is a excellent place to start to make a case for this kids to be on our team. from there it goes to erics head, betheas age, a future starter for bethea , demon on special teams, etc etc etc. after yelling at the tv screen for drafting two linebackers last year, i should have known not to question trent in the draft

LOL! I didn't stomp but did go right to Google to do my due diligence...and was pleasantly surprised! This draft is loaded with great athletes who are very versatile.

  • Tartt is big, strong and can play SS, FS, and STs.
  • Bell can be a backup QB as well as TE.
  • Smelter, when healthy, is a phenomenal athlete--all state in HS in three sports!
  • Pinion was #1 punter coming into college and #3 kicker.
  • Anderson can play TE, WR or anything in between.

Just an excellent group of athletes!

exactly, thank you for your reasoning.

It seems like there is very little of it anymore on this board, collectively.

Dahl must have given up 5-6 tds last year
