If he can equal Lance I'd be happy...minus the injury!

He was blind to scrawny aj Jenkins considerable physical limitations. Then he turned around did the same with ward, another scrawny guy with mediocre nfl athleticism.
Lack of nfl size must be accompanied by extraordinary football athleticism in order to thrive.
Ward has mediocre nfl athleticism and a lightly muscled frame. Same as aj Jenkins.
"Intense, active and energetic. Zooms around the field and stands out on tape. Aggressive run supporter -- triggers quickly, flies downhill and chops down ball carriers. Breaks on throws and shows short-area burst to close. Has quick hands to snatch interceptions. Confident and energetic. Experienced and productive. Has a 38-inch vertical jump."

I like this pick. It is his high school best friend Jimmie Ward that I am skeptical about.

I think this is a reach. No major candidates at safety with more exposure to NFL sized players? I see highlights against Mercer and Wofford. It will be an adjustment for this into the pros, and that will take time. Was this guy really going off the board in the second round if we didn't take him. Also, I am a little surprised NC that you have penciled in Harold above over Lynch. Why?

Watching this dudes video you can tell he loves to hit! Reminds me of a Goldson mentality, which can be a good and bad thing in todays NFL. I really like this pick now. Since Whitner and Goldson left, we missed a little nastiness in the middle.
Edit: at 221 pounds I wonder if there is any though of converting this kid to ILB? He might not have great cover skills as a DB, but it would be considered more than good for a LB. Just a thought.
See the Baalke thread and latest transcript for your answer.
Sounds like converting to LB is a definite no go, but kind of like I suspected, he'll be used as a LB in the dime or maybe to cover TEs in the nickle, like Willis did (guessing).
Can't believe he runs a 4.4 at his size. This dude is going to be dangerous.
I have very good visions of 2016 with Reid at FS, Tartt at SS and Ward in the slot.

It's more about scheme and HOW we used Ward. Last year we used him a lot in trail-mode and that's not his strength esp. when he wasn't healthy. He's more of a pure FS where he excels when the action is happening in from of him and he can utilize his talents/speed/play making ability. Tartt is going to be our Kam Chancellor in our big (nickel) sets on passing downs.
--------------- Eli Harold --------------- Darnell Dockett --------------- Arik Armstead --------------- Aldon Smith -------------------------
------------------------------------------------------- Navarro Bowman --------------- Jaquiski Tartt -------------------------------------------------
Tramaine Brock -------------- Antoine Bethea ---------------- Eric Reid --------------- Jimmie Ward ---------------- Dontae Johnson
Endless combinations here. You can also pull Bowman completely off the field and add another DB and allow Tartt to be that lone MIKE (like how we used to use Bowman). Or go a 3-man DL.
Hopefully Mangini uses Ward better this year and he can continue to grow into the slot CB for us and back up Reid at FS should he ever get hurt. It could very well end up being Tartt (SS) and Ward (FS) back there some day. Baalke is not going to be blindsided by another concussion-retirement.
No A.Lynch? To me the Nastiest MFer the 49ers GOT

it is so funny that i was stomping around for 15 minutes after this pick, pissed at the world and ready to join verb and sus in the mob,,, then i took into account things, that we have already discussed,, and i then understood why they made the pick and why it makes perfect sense, both short term and long term. i really really hate to rag on our players cuz they are niners but if this means dahl can be cut, that is a excellent place to start to make a case for this kids to be on our team. from there it goes to erics head, betheas age, a future starter for bethea , demon on special teams, etc etc etc. after yelling at the tv screen for drafting two linebackers last year, i should have known not to question trent in the draft
