As many have already said it's not about the voters/media. The voters/media are not in the HOF. The players and coaches and owners are. He's flipping off a brotherhood of the highest caliber of which he is now a member.

I suspect that the timing had more to do with it being a taxi. If the SUVs needed to stay at the stadium to take the VIPs back at the end of the game they may not have had the SUV option for before the game ended.
