IMO, the thing that hurt him the most was his negative comments about various QBs he played with. He just always seemed to burn bridges with teams and teammates.

His on-field performance definitely justifies HOF. While others have off-field issues yet got in, his issues were about teammates and that is field-related. I think his most egregious comments were about McNabb ("I wasn't the one who got tired on the field.") and his allegations that Garcia was gay.

This

Well stated

If Owens would have made the gay allegations against Garcia today it would not have had much impact. We are a much more open society now than we were in 2004. At that time, calling someone "gay" was still a major insult.
still is, Social media today would tear Garcia apart

I was trying to be a little generous by creating a little room for TO's original comments and the reason he might get some slack now. He didn't.

In any case, I believe a lot of voters held that totally ludicrous accusation against him.

The Hall is about being a quality football player and that entails being a good teammate, and that is where TO certainly created some problems.
It is just so funny to me that people claim TO's "most egregious comments" were:

a) a comment that completely left out the player's name that he was talking about, and

b) a response to the specific question about homosexuality about an EX teammate

Yet, people have this idea that TO continued to throw his teammates under the bus. Its baseless, yet it is common belief. It is a shame that the Hall of Fame voters are not more educated than the common fan who regurgitates narratives that arent exactly factual.

Reports say there were actually ex-players and coaches that played with him that were calling into the voters to throw him under the bus.

So, inform us of exactly what he said that was so misconstrued by the media...

Didn't I just do that? You claimed the two biggest sins he ever committed in regards to throwing his teammates under the bus were when he said "I wasnt the one who got tired in the Superbowl" (period, no expanding on this), and calling Jeff Garcia (who wasnt even on his team at this point) gay.

If those are the two most egregious examples of TO throwing his teammates under the bus, then the idea that TO is constantly throwing his teammates under the bus is completely false.

First of all, I did say he belongs in the HOF based on his performance ON the field. I then gave my opinion, which is both mine and what I have heard from writers, some of whom have a vote, as to why he didn't get in. All of those were centered around his relations with teammates.

So we may wind up agreeing to disagree, however, it is clear that the voters clearly have issues with his relations with teammates as there is just too much smoke that has gathered around that topic to assume there was no fire.
FWIW, McNabb said on espn the other day that it's an absolute travesty Owens hasn't been put in the HoF. He acknowledged that he could probably be seen as the teammate most likely to endorse the whole bad teammate thing, and even with all that they'd been through, he says that the voters f**ked this whole thing up. In more or less words. lol
The goat!

I wonder if T.O. had won at least a Super Bowl if any of this political horses**t would really come into play. Maybe but probably not so these HOF voters have a giant stick up their ass about a few improprieties he engaged in. Lawrence Taylor did crap alot worse but got in (not sure if 1st ballot) cuz his body of work was so undeniable and had a couple SB rings.

he'll get in sooner or later. not all of us can be first ballot HOFers.
TO gets the shaft because he NEGATIVELY impacted the career of several NFL players who did nothing to deserve TO's tirades!
Who cares if he called out some teammates. Not the first player to do that. Brady yells and screams at his teammates live on tv often.

You have lebron b***hing every week about needing play-makers. Coaches call out their players all the timE. Seattle players and coaches fought each other on the sideline every week.

This s**t is petty and ridiculous.

Please name the "several NFL players" who TO negatively impacted the careers of. Please.

This should be good....
