Rivers numbers: new money is four years, $84 million ... $65 million guaranteed.
That guaranteed money is something serious.

yea, but he's only 32. And in quarterback years, that is still very young. He should still be very productive in year 5 of that contract. Therefore, he is worth every penny.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Problem is you invest that much into the QB spot (which you have to now a days) the rest of the team suffers and you have to stack it with good young cheap guys which is tough to do. Even if you can do it it's hard to keep them after their rookie contract. Rivers best days are behind him and if they can't win it with LT, Merriman, Gates, etc they probably wont do anything with this current team. Probably another 7-9 win season for them as usual.

Smart move on their part.
Life is a gamble and they made a solid bet.

Rivers is a good player IMO with a good O Line in front of him. He has a RB now so that should make him better. He is a good pocket passer.

Was Melvin Gordon rated higher than Ryan Matthews coming out of the draft?

For sure he is more highly regarded than Ryan Matthews coming out of the draft. Plus he was more productive and accomplished in college.

I know Eli has the rings, but I'd take Rivers over him any day of the week.

Oh yeah, I don't quite remember if I was covering the draft for a website back when Mathews was drafted, but Gordon is in every way a better back IMO. More potential.

I actually like Phil Rivers.
He doesn't play scared, and he's kind of unfiltered.
