Maybe he's not as healthy as they were letting last season?
on the first glance, they would have lost against the cap.
however, his release will be a post June the first, hence they indeed save cap space.

I don't claim to understand all this, but here is an excerpt from a profootballrumors.com article but it captures the essence of the situation quite well.

"This move comes less than 15 minutes before Gurley would have been guaranteed $10.5MM. It will send the 25-year-old running back into free agency. The Rams will eat a staggering $20.15MM in dead money in total, though they'll spread it out over two years via the post-June 1 designation (via Field Yates of ESPN.com). The Rams will also see $5.5MM in cap savings, starting on June 2."

This is the Ripping-the-Bandaid off approach, but they didn't have much choice. He was going to cost them over $17 million to keep and they don't seem to think he is worth the difference, or they need the money to sign other players.

His 2021 roster bonus of $5 million and 2020 salary of $5.5 million would both have been guaranteed starting tomorrow. They're taking a hit in dead cap space by cutting him ($8.4 million in signing bonus gets moved up to 2020). Their 2020 cap space would have been higher if they kept him (the only thing they save in 2020 is his $5.5 million in salary), but they save a lot of money down the road. If he isn't going to fully recover, this makes sense from a long-term perspective.

If the Rams kept him through 2023, they would have had to pay him $57.15 million. His cap hit in 2020 is $20.15 million. They didn't think he was worth the incremental $37 million over 4 years which is probably a good call.

Net impact on cap space by year (excluding roll-overs):
2020: -$2.9 million
2021: +$13.2 million
2022: +$14.2 million
2023: +$12.5 milion

I think that net impact number assumed that the dead money hit was taken entirely in the 2020 season. It well be spread out over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, hence the increase in cap space this year, but the money won't be available until June 2.

The Rams really screwed this one up... and others...

You're right - I missed that. They did free up some space this year then, but they're probably looking out to 2021-2023 once they're out of salary cap hell. Cutting him is a good move by them in my opinion.
adding to the plethora of "boy, the Rams fked themselves" comments.

Totally agree that the Rams made a good move by releasing Gurley. Their screw up was with the original risky contract. I love that they are paying the piper for their arrogance in all these deals.

Gurley, washed out running back at 25.

He was never the same after the 2018 knee injury. There was a time that when he handled the ball? He was going to gain at least five yards. That's a pretty good average for a full season.

Last year it slipped. Badly. Something wasn't right with him. Given that the Rams cut him, something still isn't right. Did he ever have surgery for the knee issue?
How do you go from being in the Super Bowl in 2019 to rebuilding?

You hand out Deforest Buckner contracts!

I'm not a physician, but I don't think surgery can fix arthritic knees for a [once] top flight NFL RB

because they kept giving the ball to gurley and having him run into deforest buckner twice a year.
Lol Rams were never going to be yearly contenders they basically put all their chips in for 2018 and only managed 3 points in the big game, now they're back to irrelevance where they've mostly been for the past 30 years

Those McVay> Shanahan takes from 2 years ago(including from some posters) are looking real bad right now.
Officially official lol

They really messed this up. The actual Ram isn't bad, but my god...

It's like they asked the Chargers first, then when they got turned down went to the Rams with the same idea
