theyre going all in for the next 2 years, they feel the window is closing, this move at least put them in the conversation in the NFC
This may be an upgrade for the Rams but I'm glad it wasn't the Niners trading 2 firsts and a 3rd for Stafford. I was willing to trade 2 seconds and a third but the Rams paid a steep price for a guy with that many miles on him.

Having said that, this really shows the difference between the 2 organizations. The Rams are a team that makes bold moves and swings for the fences. The Niners are way more conservative and value their draft picks. Which is the best way? Who knows? It may take a few years to see the long term ramifications of trading away all those #1s year after year. This will be 3 straight years with no #1 counting this year. At this point, each team has made it to one SB in the last few years and each struggled the following year. Stay tuned.

Considering that Rams regime inherited a roster that was playoff ready, whereas Shanahan and Lynch had to build a roster from the ground up, yet Rams have only been slightly more successful and the Niners have had their number in head to head matchups, I've got a lot of faith in our philosophy.
I give the Rams a lot of credit. They are trying.
Rams can easily make the cap work, Using the calculator at OTC, I got them $25m under the (projected) cap by trading Goff, and restructuring Donald, Ramsey, Kupp and Woods (they all have guaranteed salary for 2021 anyways). Stafford would cost $5m on the cap after restructure (2014 void year). They can still fit 2-3 impact FA with backloaded contract.
There is an expensive new stadium and the seats and luxury boxes must be filled. It was a good move unloading Goff, he was not the answer. Did they pay too much? Probably, but how many top QB's are available.
Giving that much for a player who constantly makes a couple of huge bone head plays a week is too much for me. Stafford throws for a lot of yards but always seems to throw that big int at the worst possible times.

Amazing that you figured it all out in 10 minutes.... You should be a GM somewhere!
They traded 2 firsts, 2 seconds and 2 thirds to move up and draft Goff. They got to one SB and lost. Now 4 years later they trade Goff for 2 firsts and a third. So in the end they got Stafford for 4 first rounders, 2 second rounders and 3 third rounders plus a starting QB.

The Niners got Jimmy for a 2nd rounder and still managed to get to a SB and lose.

Sounds familiar
The Rams now will not have a 1st Rd. draft pick for seven straight years, 2017 - 2023. Wow. The margin for error in fielding winning teams & sustaining success over the long haul is already pretty thin...the Rams just made it a lot thinner for themselves for this upcoming season and years to come.

We'll see what kind of talent they're able to have on both sides of the ball plus Stafford with the lowered cap this upcoming season. They'd better hope no one - I mean almost literally no one (especially Stafford as he's had some back issues) - gets injured. Over the course of a long NFL season, where injuries can & do happen at any position, having more quality talent/more quality depth really sets teams apart.

If the impact players they have now plus Stafford are mostly healthy, they should be pretty good - at least you would think. That said, I definitely like the Niners' chances vs. them and any team in the division with Garoppolo plus the talent on both sides of the ball & what they'll add in the draft (and FA/trades). The Niners will have at least 10 draft picks, something I value in continuing to build short and long term success, and I'm very glad the team values draft picks the way they do.

According to Vegas it currently gives them the 3rd best odds at winning the SB next year.
IMO trading the farm to strike gold during "windows" is stupid. Winning championships is a matter of building a program that is able to be sustainable over many years. This is how it worked for the chiefs and Steelers, these kinds of teams don't have "windows" because they are always in the conversation due to drafting well and making good cost effective moves in FA.

There are too many variables in how postseasons play out that make selling your future for trying to win in a single period really stupid. Stafford could blow away the league next year but in the nfc title game his teams punt returner could fumble away the game. Now you're one year without a championship and without a first rounder
Rams trying to win one, Lynch and Shanahan trying to win many. That's the difference. Mcvay and Snead will be out if LA in 3 years or less. They don't care, just looking for success now; let a sucker worry about the rebuilt.

We will either pull off a Watson trade or we getting a QB in the first round.
