Aaron Donald is a RARE breed. He and Mack reset the market but they have their own market. Buckner plays inside. Those are much cheaper contracts. It's not like every DT is suddenly going to make what Aaron Donald made. These aren't QB's.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense to sit on him for two years and then work out a contract extension then. If you can't reach an agreement, THEN franchise tag him which will still only be $16M+ tops.

Agree with you sir. People need to put down the fan goggles for a second and look at this as a business.

Defo said his agent is talking to the Niners which probably means he wants to get paid/extended. Don't cause a toxic relationship because we have control for two years. Why are people so hung up him getting paid for whatever? Are the Niners strapped for cash? Is it your money you're paying him?

Ok. So you good with extending anybody at max money or does your line of reasoning stop at Buckner? Again, not our money so who cares right?

Paying the best player we have, why not?

"Toxic relationship" love it.

Hey DeFo - we would like to rip up the last two years of your cheap contract AND not franchise tag you so you can get guaranteed money in your pocket immediately. But we are gonna do it for less than max. Please don't hate us?

Don't act like it doesn't happen. Leveon Bell, Earl Thomas, etc.

Why? We did the same thing with Armstead and Ward, two other first round picks and they probably would have done the same with Foster. It's just business. Who knows where the team will be at in 2-3 years. No rush. This is just business. You can still meet with his agent and start talking about the long term plan and start setting up parameters. Buckner is a top 10 paid rookie. He ain't starving.

Please don't tell me you're comparing Armstead and ward with Buckner.

I'm not. I'm showing you proof of how FO's managed first round contracts. We moved up in the first to get Garnett for the simple fact we get his 5th year option which should be cheaper in the grand scheme of things BEFORE you make that big pay out.

But that's with mediocre and average first rounders. We'll just have to see how they deal with Buckner,

From a business point you're bang on, but we're a team building a culture with football guys, if I'm John Lynch I'm getting the message out that you bring the skills, we'll pay the bills.

It's Paraag so it'll be team friendly if his play drops in the future, but just pay the man.

Also - Garoppolo and Buckner are not even remotely close situations. Only similarity is the team.

Garoppolo plays the most premium position in sports, had a mere 7 game sample size, was only on the roster for three months and only had two tags at the team's disposal.

None of those things apply to Buckner.

Point is we got a team friendly deal done even when Jimmy had more leverage. Not sure why people think Buckner is going to rape us. He'll get paid, it will be big #'s, when you break it down everything will be ok. The longer you wait though his deal is not going to get smaller.

He won't because he can't.
As a fellow member already posted, extending him now could save us money in long-term.

How? That's only with the assumption DT's are all going to blow up like QB's did. They've been pretty steady until Aaron Donald.
