Heck, he deserves the money just for his ability to stay healthy and ready every game day. That is more than can be said for 90+% of this team.

Not really. Why pay him $15M+ this year on a long term contract when you can pay him that over the next two years...total?

Aaron Donald is a RARE breed. He and Mack reset the market but they have their own market. Buckner plays inside. Those are much cheaper contracts. It's not like every DT is suddenly going to make what Aaron Donald made. These aren't QB's.

From a business standpoint, it makes sense to sit on him for two years and then work out a contract extension then. If you can't reach an agreement, THEN franchise tag him which will still only be $16M+ tops.

Agree with you sir. People need to put down the fan goggles for a second and look at this as a business.

From a business point you're bang on, but we're a team building a culture with football guys, if I'm John Lynch I'm getting the message out that you bring the skills, we'll pay the bills.

It's Paraag so it'll be team friendly if his play drops in the future, but just pay the man.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't be upset if we did pay him. I just want us to wait two years and THEN add 5 more years to his contract. You resign him now, you eliminate 2 years off his contract at a very reasonable cost.

Also, 2019 is the year we tabbed to spend some $ in free agency too. We'll see what they do. I just don't want them using Buckner's new contract (this year) as an excuse to be mildly aggressively prudent with parameters again.

That's the advantage of any 1st rounder...you get that cheaper 5th year option and an extra year to work out a LT contract. And for an oft injured AA, gives you another year to v evaluate him to see if he's worth a LT deal. This isn't about talent.

How? That's only with the assumption DT's are all going to blow up like QB's did. They've been pretty steady until Aaron Donald.

It doesn't matter the position. If you have a stud young player you want to keep long-term, it is always cheaper to sign them now than later.

I don't believe that is always true. I just showed you the numbers. Even if he continues to blow up, we already know what the cap and market is...might add an extra $1M or two but you also save on the front end and add two extra years of having him.

I get it, but I don't want a Mack situation, I don't want him disgruntled. I think he might accept it if we get Earl Thomas and Brandon Graham, but I think we'd rather pay our own guys when they earn it.

They'll extend him. But hard to imagine it is a priority this offseason.

This.

They will wait to see what free agency brings and how our cap space looks. I am pretty sure they will at least present a good offer to DeFo's agent this off season. How FA pans out will determine the structure of the offer.

Jumping at the chance to overpay is exactly what will happen here. highest paid DL coming right up, this offseason.

This is what the Webzone wants. But it's not what will happen.

JG's contract goes to 19M next seaon so we'll be in an excellent position to get the deal done this year.

It's a priority but, IMO, not "THE" priority.

If we extend him this offseason he's not getting more than Aaron Donald. He'd be lucky to get $20M a year.

If we wait another year and he has another 12 sack season though...

This. Next year, we're expecting he'll have some other players around him that demand some attention. I have no problem with working out a deal now. Plus, it's not like he just finally had a good year. He's been a good player every season in the league.
Extend him now before his numbers get too high
This made me lose a lot of the hope I had left for Thomas. Not sure how I missed this. One year apart, similar rosters. Buck vs Oregon state, Thomas vs Oregon state. Looks very different. One guy does his job ok. And one guy gets constant penetration.

On the bright side. We're extremely lucky to have Buckner. Dude is unbelievable.
