Aaron Donald is a RARE breed. He and Mack reset the market but they have their own market. Buckner plays inside. Those are much cheaper contracts. It's not like every DT is suddenly going to make what Aaron Donald made. These aren't QB's.
From a business standpoint, it makes sense to sit on him for two years and then work out a contract extension then. If you can't reach an agreement, THEN franchise tag him which will still only be $16M+ tops.

From a business point you're bang on, but we're a team building a culture with football guys, if I'm John Lynch I'm getting the message out that you bring the skills, we'll pay the bills.
It's Paraag so it'll be team friendly if his play drops in the future, but just pay the man.

How? That's only with the assumption DT's are all going to blow up like QB's did. They've been pretty steady until Aaron Donald.

It doesn't matter the position. If you have a stud young player you want to keep long-term, it is always cheaper to sign them now than later.

Yeah, don't get me wrong. I wouldn't be upset if we did pay him. I just want us to wait two years and THEN add 5 more years to his contract. You resign him now, you eliminate 2 years off his contract at a very reasonable cost.
Also, 2019 is the year we tabbed to spend some $ in free agency too. We'll see what they do. I just don't want them using Buckner's new contract (this year) as an excuse to be mildly aggressively prudent with parameters again.

If we extend him this offseason he's not getting more than Aaron Donald. He'd be lucky to get $20M a year.
If we wait another year and he has another 12 sack season though...
