Considering contract incentives, he'd never turn down the invite. If Cox drops out, Buckner gets selected to replace him automatically for being the 1st alternate.
The very idea that Cox getting hurt could determine whether or not Buckner's 2018 season gets remembered as being great makes the entire process seem pretty ridiculous. But considering how big of a part of both career legacy and contract negotiations are based on these things, you take every selection you can get.
