#49ers pick up DeForest Buckner's fifth-year option — locking him in thru 2020 — as expected. As far as a long-term deal, I've been told hammering out one next offseason is more realistic than this offseason.

Smart. Only makes sense in the fan world to get it done this offseason. Buckner would not get an optimal deal in 2019. Niners own him for four more years.

"B...bu...but he will cost more later!!"
Who cares? The salary cap is going to explode. These things just don't matter to the extent we play them up.

Yup no point in giving out extensions early, a lot can change with a player.

Most are forgetting... it may not be beneficial for Buckner to do a deal right now.
Niners hold all the cards right now. Buckner may want to wait, put a 15 sack season on tape, not wait for people to drop out of the Pro Bowl to make it, and then cash in.
The ONLY reason Buckner would sign a deal now is to protect against injury.
This...his camp has a motive too. But we have control of him for 3-4 more years and the IDL market is set about as high as it's going to get. Somewhere down the road, he'll get $18-20M. No biggie.
Most guys making $18-20 million are the ones who've already won a DPOY. Not sure Buck has that in him.

Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't.
But as it stands today -- the Niners can control his NFL team for the next four years. He would need to take a hefty discount to get them to waive that control for a new immediate guarantee.

Just look at the money Frank Clark got. He didn't win DPOY. Look at the other players and that they got. Money is just going up and Buckner is worth more than Frank Clark.

Paraag gonna moneyball it and ensure we take QW so we don't have to pay Buckner later.

Have no choice with the cap increasing every year and players getting paid more and more. He wil get paid over that amount no matter what if he keeps doing what he has been.

That Frank Clark deal is horrific. The draft is full of pass rushers and they paid 105M + a 1st and 2nd for the 18th ranked edge defender (PFF). Houston was ranked 14th and Ford 11th.
They're basically paying Clark 10x the guy they could've picked at 29... plus giving up another 2nd rounder.
Or another way... over the next 5 years they'll pay Clark about the same as the Bears will pay Mack (105M vs 111M).

Different positions. He'll be slotted with the top tier of DT's; not edge rushers.

Clark played a lot more OLB than DT last year.

$18M to $20M is fair value for our best defender.
