So, yeah, they should be far apart. Whatever gap there is will narrow as Buckner eats up his controllable years AND the Niners have more data to prove what trajectory he is on.

The smart way to play this out would be to keep him for his contract plus franchise years and then let him walk. Interior players get worn down over the years.

I think they can control him for four years and then just wait and see what he's worth at that point. He'll be 29 before he ever gets to sniff FA.
Buckner is probably asking for a contract amongst the top 3 highest paid at DT because he knows the chances of him outperforming his 2018 production are pretty high. The additions of more defensive line talent is going to allow him more 1v1s and it makes no sense to sell yourself short right now.

It also makes no sense for Lynch to commit to a long term contract if the terms are that high. Let DeFo go out there and prove it and if he takes off in 2019, then what did you lose? Nothing because the money won't really change much, but if he doesn't blow up then the price could come down.
Hopefully Bosa steals some sacks from him. We can't afford to pay him Donald money. And hes not on Donalds level, imo.

Could he pull a L. Bell though?
Just pay the damn man. No need to go down this road.

Not yet, but Buckner is incredibly talented and is now going into his 4th season.

Donald in year 3 put up 8 sacks, 47 tackles, 17 TFL, and 31 QB hits.

Buckner in year 3 put up 12 sacks, 67 tackles, 17 TFL, and 20 QB hits.

Stats don't tell the whole story because Donald has been a monster since day 1 and his presence has been felt even when his numbers didn't always reflect that, but Buckner seems to now be hitting his stride and he's most likely going to keep getting better since he only recently turned 25yo.
The fact that they're far apart means they just started negotiations. This is par for the course.

SF can afford to pay him whatever...the longer they wait the higher the price will be. His agent isn't dumb and they're gonna wait to see what Grady Jarrett, Chris jones, and Leonard Williams all get.

I'm not worried at all, SF wants him here LT and Buck wants to be here LT.
The NFL is short hand for Not For Long. Get what you can young man, but don't be greedy.

My personal opinion is that Buck is a very good player, but maybe not a "game changer," yet. Sure he had 12 sacks, but how many of those where on critical plays or determined the outcome of a game? We still finished with a pretty crappy record.

Not the same situation. Bell played a year through the tag. As a 2nd rounder, he also never had the 5th year option placed on him.

Could he hold out? Sure, anybody can. But he is so far away from ever seeing UFA that what possible end could it achieve?
Of course they're far apart. Neither side has much incentive to do a deal right now. The 9ers have a few years of control left and Buckner is looking at a great situation for entering the final years of his deal in terms of the talent around him. Either side would only take a deal if it was clearly to their advantage at this point. Not likely.

At the end of the day, this is nothing to worry about.

The Niners were willing to not only trade away valuable assets but also give Mack his monster deal. They will absolutely do the same here when Buckner earns that kind of leverage.

I agree he isn't as consistent of a DL you want play in and play out. But it's rediculous to think his best days are behind him. I say give him top 3 DT money because these next 5 years will be his prime. That's when he will get old man strength. Buckner is a monster on passing downs.

he's absolutely a game-changer. He needs players around him and will finally have that.

in that Seattle game he had 11 TOT 4 TFL and 2 sacks.

Aaron Donald didn't exactly win a ton of games for the Rams either (not until McVay got there). Mack didn't win a ton of games for the Raiders. They're still game changing talents, but unless they're a QB, it's unlikely that a player can make a bad team good on their own.
