He's a top 5 DT in the league and just turned 25...no doubt you're gonna pay him top money

Someone on here said AA is interchangeable with Buckner so we should just let Buckner walk.

Another (webzone MVP) says that DTs get worn down so we should just let him walk.

I swear the Webzone is special sometimes. Lol

My personal opinion is that Buck is a very good player, but maybe not a "game changer," yet. Sure he had 12 sacks, but how many of those where on critical plays or determined the outcome of a game? We still finished with a pretty crappy record.

Aaron Donald didn't exactly win a ton of games for the Rams either (not until McVay got there). Mack didn't win a ton of games for the Raiders. They're still game changing talents, but unless they're a QB, it's unlikely that a player can make a bad team good on their own.

All good points. I guess I'm just looking for those Justin Smith and Aldon Smith moments where they are just so savage they are constantly causing problems even when they don't hit the QB. As Waterbear pointed out, I don't quite see that in Buckner, yet. He'll flash moments of brilliance, but you don't feel his presences all through the game in and out of games. Maybe the data will prove me wrong, but I don't think so. At least that's my impression.
We better get the best player on the team extended.

complete nonsense lol...it's hard to find DTs that can rush the passer like Buck. It's a reason why Q was regarded so highly.

getting 10+ sacks out of a DT is not the norm.

Guys like Suh (10 sacks once), McCoy (never had double digit sacks), Cox (10.5 once) are all regarded as the elite DTs besides Donald and IMO Buck is a better pass rusher then all 3 of them.

no doubt Paragg and the FO have been preparing to pay Buckner a big contract. I think Buckner's people are probably asking for top dollar and the FO is asking for Buckner to prove this season that he is as good as Donald and Watt (healthy Watt)

I think he is in the same tier as those guys. We suck, so he just doesn't get the same exposure.

With the amount of cap space we have, it shouldn't be a problem.

It's because he's a DT....I think people need to step back and actually appreciate what Donald did this past yr. 20.5 sacks as a pure DT is f**king insane and not something that is normal.

He's like 2 tiers above every player at his position AND even he had his moments where he wasn't this game finisher *cough SB.... in fact he really wasn't some pass rushing monster in the playoffs

Buck is a stud and now has two edge rushers that will only help him improve. He's only 25.

Pay the man and be happy he's a Niner for the long haul

Of course they're far apart. Neither side has much incentive to do a deal right now. The 9ers have a few years of control left and Buckner is looking at a great situation for entering the final years of his deal in terms of the talent around him. Either side would only take a deal if it was clearly to their advantage at this point. Not likely.

Pretty much this. Slow news day.

While he won't get Donald money...he will and should be one of the top DTs contract wise. It's just how things are setup....you will be one of the top guys paid when it's your turn to get paid IF you've been playing at a pro-bowl level.

We see it with WRs, edge rushers, OT, QBs etc. Once Buck get's paid the next top end DT will make more.

Could he pull a L. Bell though?

Not the same situation. Bell played a year through the tag. As a 2nd rounder, he also never had the 5th year option placed on him.

Could he hold out? Sure, anybody can. But he is so far away from ever seeing UFA that what possible end could it achieve?

Far away from ever seeing UFA - because of the 5th year option and franchise tag for how many years...?

I think this is pretty obvious. Didn't you hear? We just waived DL Ryan Delaire. Clearly we are making room for Bucks contract....
Not worried in the slightest unless we're still hearing this a year from now. Seeing how he does with Bosa and Ford is something both sides want/need to see before finalizing a deal IMO.
Pay him

Why? He's already done very well playing next to bench warmers. I don't think he needs to prove anything.
