But we got 4 years of great play out of him on a rookie deal too. That's actually a great return on that 7th pick
Has any player that needed a new deal for 20+mil/year gone for a top 10 pick?

Loved Buck but like some have said $21mil a year is so steep but at least we'll get someone good at #13...hopefully.

This is the type of move you make when you have to try to keep a great team great. I get why people dont like it and I'm still about it but I get the logic.

I believe this was also done because lynch wants to see what Thomas can do playing inside at his natural spot

So, now that it's all out, the 49ers had two apparent choices:

DeFo + some undefined comp/trade compensation
OR
Armstead + the 13th overall pick + ~12m in cap relief from Buckner.
I mean, yeah. That's a pretty solid outcome for the 49ers.
Well when you put it that way there's a lot of logic...gotta see what becomes of these newly acquired assets.

Buckner has been a really good player for SF, but getting the 13th overall pick for a DT entering the final year of his rookie deal is very good value. #49ers

I don't think we're clearing space just to blow it on a big-name FA.
Plus now we can draft Jeudy, Lamb, Ruggs, etc at #13!

Buckner is worth it. How much he was doubled benefited others.

I'm torn about this. I loved Buckner's consistency and reliability but if he wanted Aaron Donald money then you just can't do that and 13th pick gives us a lot of great options(Henry Ruggs come on down!) and allows us to move back from #31 and recoup picks for day 2.
Hopefully this works out for both teams as I wish Buckner well(as long as it's not against us)
Armstead better live up to that money.

Getting the thirteenth pick back=excellent
Going into next season with the high probability of Nick Bosa being the only pass rusher on the field=nightmare reality
