But if Armstead continues to play at a high level and we hit on the 13th overall pick we set ourselves up for a huge gain. It works both ways.
Yes, we know Buckner is elite...but we don't know if keeping him will give us enough cap flexibility for the future. Will signing him to a huge deal give us enough cap room to bring back Kittle (also elite) for the long-term?
We don't know for sure if Armstead is going to be a 10+ sack guy again but it's reasonable to think he has the ability to do it. The only way to find out is to give him that opportunity.

Interesting takes on this....I thought there would be a bit more outrage.
First, THANK YOU BUCK!!!....for your play, your poise, your presence in the locker room, and your class. You were a truly great Niner and you will be missed!!
Next, given the state of the salary cap now, there is unfortunately, not a way to keep guys like Buckner long term. The Niners must believe they have good players such as DJ Jones, K Street, Blair, and Taylor (just to name of few) that can help pick up the slack.
Still, this is a tough one for me to take because Buck did everything you could ask from a player...worked hard, played hard, played great, was a leader, was great in the community, and conducted himself with aplomb, Buck...just wish you the very best moving forward..and perhaps, when your deal with Indy is done, you'll somehow find yourself back in the Bay Area.
Cheers!

He was, however, he did not have the same impact he had in 2018, IMO. He certainly did not match up to the hype about what he would do with Bosa and Ford. If anything, it was AA that did what many had predicted for Buckner.
I'm very happy with the trade. It really brings some interesting trade down opportunities. There will be teams that will send multiple high picks to move up to 13 if "their guy" is there. I could easily see this trade bringing a total of 3 high picks picks to the 49ers. The 31 pick has only the 5th year option to entice teams. 13 brings some serious weight.
Agreed, plus now they more than doubled their cap space

You'll be singing a different tune when AA and Thomas are getting blown up next year! Buckner was the key!
Hardly, he was a big piece but a replaceable piece that was not worth 20 mill a season. Niners are great at picking d lineman and will be just fine. Middle of the line was very clogged.

Only if we nail the 13th overall pick. If we whiff its a horrible move.
What if we trade down and turn it into multiple picks?

It would be great to somehow make a splash for Joey Bosa

So we trade for an elite DL that was too expensive... for an elite EDGE that will probably be just as expensive?
Seems kind of counter-intuitive, no? Unless we're planning on trading Ford, too.

AA is no BY let alone Stubbs. More like we let those guys walk so we could keep Ricky Jackson

Rather trade 13 and 31 for 2 and draft Chase Young.

We will trade Kittle next. Shanny is the goat at making superstar TEs.

No. Extension maybe.
Can't. Need money for OBJ.
