You do have to make tough decisions thanks to the salary cap BUT you don't ship away the heart and soul of your D that is just hitting their prime. You do whatever it takes to lock them up and if that means tagging them, then you do it. Would much rather have Buckner and Aiyuk then AA, Ward, Kinlaw and Aiyuk smh
Buckner declined the offer, nothing more we can do but make the trade

a similar scenario is going to happen with Trent w soon

"I was hoping the 49ers would at least meet me in the middle," he admits now. "I definitely didn't expect them to trade me. I poured my heart and soul into that organization … to go from 2-14 my first year to build a culture and get to a Super Bowl?

"You just don't expect to be traded."

I can believe a players own words, Middlekauff the source of the $60 million turned down is just another talking head.

There is another article out there that Quotes Defo in stating that Lynch and co. didn't even try to negotiate with him. This was a FO fail.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Buck have one more year before his contract was up aka 2020. A whole nother year to workout a deal and if it doesn't get done, franchise tag him. Crazy concept isn't it, actually use the franchise tag for its intended purpose, a franchise player.

Not crazy when you have kittle to pay, now Williams then Warner then bosa

how many guys can you pay top money too?
The jury is still out until we see what player Kinlaw turns into. This isn't about Buckner vs Armstead. It's Buckner vs Kinlaw. Kinlaw is the player we got due to that trade.

This. The talking head is believing the internet. A player is telling you yeah that reported offer was bs.

But you can't pay everybody and Buckner had great trade value. This was a NE move. It doesn't always pan out but tough choices have to be made with the cap.

There was really nothing to negotiate when his agent absolutely wouldn't budge off anything less than 21 Mill.

Your post reminded me of Lawyer Malloy's situation. very similar to Buckner's situation, in my eyes.

Lawyer Milloy's end of summer release from the New England Patriots was one of the early introductions to Bill Belichick's ruthlessness as the czar in Foxborough. Prior to that release in 2003, Lawyer was one of the NFL's elite safeties, being named to the Pro Bowl four times, was a first-team All-Pro in '99 and helped the franchise win its first Super Bowl title in 2001. He was also named to the All-Decade Team for the 1990s and 2000s.

That all came to a swift halt leading up to the 2003 regular season as issues arose surrounding his contract. As he explained during his Monday appearance on WEEI's Orday, Merloni and Fauria, Milloy said that he was given an ultimatum by Belichick and eventually was let go

You keep your cornerstone players, thats no excuse. DL would've been set for yeaaaars with Bosa and Buckner. You wouldn't have the need another elite DT or DE. You could've plugged in cheaper vets / rookies and that would've saved you money long term and production would've still been solid. Now we have to pay a guy like Hyder at least 7-8+ mil because AA isn't an elite player. Hopefully Kinlaw pans out, and if he does, we better not be dumb enough to trade him too.

As things stand today, the front office made a big mistake trading Defo. There's no way around it. The money stuff is a cop-out. I hope they learned their lesson and never trade away another young, productive, durable, consistent, and high-character player(cough*Warner). Of course, this is all changes if Kinlaw reaches his ceiling and becomes an elite interior DL, but as of today, they f**ked up.
