Depends how you look at it. We would be paying him during the worst injury year ever and having him may have gotten us one more win and some spots further away from a better draft pick.

That sounds like a bad agent who sent the wrong signals to the team - so if they thought it would be more, who do you believe? Believe me I HATE that we got rid of Defo, but if your agent isn't telling you "this is a business" and you're shocked that a team will trade you during the negotiation of a huge contract, your agent needs to be fired and you need better representation.

Just give him a competitive deal like the Colts did. I don't get why this is difficult. The 49ers saved $4m APY by keeping Armstead. Does anyone really believe the gap between Defo and AA is that small? The 49ers saved $4m APY and their DL got substantially worse. As things stand, it's extremely unlikely the 49ers ever sniff the 2019 DL's performance. They traded away an extremely productive, young, and arguably ELITE interior DL for a mediocre, easily-replaced and one-dimensional(run defender) player in Arik Armstead. AA makes $17m APY. Just let that sink in. Defo isn't worth it at $21m, but AA is okay at $17m...

I think trading Defo will soon become the #1 mistake this regime has made. It all hinges on Kinlaw and if he can or cannot reach his ceiling. If Kinlaw turns into the guy we think we can become, then this discussion is moot. But right now, it was a disastrous trade.

You keep your cornerstone players, thats no excuse. DL would've been set for yeaaaars with Bosa and Buckner. You wouldn't have the need another elite DT or DE. You could've plugged in cheaper vets / rookies and that would've saved you money long term and production would've still been solid. Now we have to pay a guy like Hyder at least 7-8+ mil because AA isn't an elite player. Hopefully Kinlaw pans out, and if he does, we better not be dumb enough to trade him too.

As things stand today, the front office made a big mistake trading Defo. There's no way around it. The money stuff is a cop-out. I hope they learned their lesson and never trade away another young, productive, durable, consistent, and high-character player(cough*Warner). Of course, this is all changes if Kinlaw reaches his ceiling and becomes an elite interior DL, but as of today, they f**ked up.

scroll up like 6 posts. he (Buckner) said that isn't true. i'll trust him over some guy in the media. as far as we know we put that out there to make it seem like we tried really hard. Buckner said they were barely even in contact with him or his agent during negotiations. i guess he could have a slimy pos agent, but that's more of a stretch.

THE question really should be is whether or not Bucko would have accepted the contract Arik got..

Hated the trade then, hated it now. Should have cut Ford, Armstead and Thomas and kept Buckner.

I'm pretty sure they couldn't have cut Ford or Thomas for anything major.

Trade AA would have been the smart move.

If AA sucks as much as you say he does... who would actually want to trade for him with that contract?

If you're gonna troll be a smart troll.
