He was the head coach of a top 20 Div 1 program. He probably recruited every player in the 1st round ... lol.

Its great that the coach and the GM seem to be working pretty well together. Armstead is a Baalke wet dream being a 4-tech, with how tall and long he is, Kelly recruited and coached him.

Garnett is a mauler of a run blocker, similar to other OL's that Baalke has drafted, was recruited by Kelly when he was at Oregon and is mobile enough to fit in his zone blocking scheme, especially the inside zone run game.

We got 2 starters in the draft on day one. It's already a good draft. Yeah, we might have overpaid, but we got 2 players rated number one in their respective positions. AND we fixed 2 areas of greatest need on the team.

I had him picked in 3rd round in my mock, and yes he might have been there tomorrow, but we NEEDED this guy. I picked our 1st. 2 picks so im happy. BTW- JACK MAY NEED MICROFRACTURE SURGERY..I'd love to have got him or Smith, but not in the 1st. round
Carlos Hyde in love with baalke right now

my god. that would be something.. if davis can do something i will change my mind about firing rathman
Seems like a good prospect but they say his pass blocking is subpar. If that's case why not just pay Iupati ?
Garnett's entire family is composed of 49ers fans. True story. Of course the guy wanted to be here.
Nice

Baalke also hates paying a lot for guards. By moving back to 1st we can get a 5 yr deal on him.

Correct. FA guards are overpaid, but having top talent at the position is still important.

With DL and OL addressed (assuming the FO believes in Trent Brown), frees up the rest of the draft to look at LB, CB, TE, and WR.

true, now we can go get ILB, TE, WR and we can address these needs with the picks we have left.
That might be part of it, but he's a guy he clearly wanted to bolster Kelly's OL. His Stanford Coach, David Shaw, was beaming after his selection...said Niner fans will love this guy, he's big, nasty, just what we need on our OL. He's also smart...a biology major. I think we got two real studs tonight in Buckner & Garnett. So far, I'm a very happy camper.
