The 49ers of 2018

I'm a Gator fan and was not a fan of Driskel while he was at Florida. I never thought he was the entire problem as our offense as a whole during those Muschump years was bad but he was just inconsistent and frustrating to watch. Our passing game was putrid and I always blamed him because I felt like he was slow to process things and quick to check down. However, I followed him closely at LA Tech just because I wanted to see what he would do in a spread system and despite my dislike of him, I thought he played phenomenal. He really saved his college career last year and because we hired Chip and his system, I think Driskel will end up being a great fit. I don't see him starting anytime soon but I'm interested to see his development by 2018. He can make all of the throws, has great athletic ability, big body, quick release and does a pretty good job in the short to intermediate stuff. I was hoping for Dak but Driskel in the 6th is great value and he will, at worst, be a solid back-up QB for us.

Fair points. But curious what you see in Dak compared to Driskel?

Although it was a much different system that Dak played in compared to Driskel at Florida, Dak showed improvement as a passer every year vs some of the best defensive talent in the nation. He was very raw as a Sophomore and just super athletic but his JR year he started becoming more of a passing threat and last year he looked even better. He never appeared scared of the moment and had no issues taking and completing passes down the field. Driskel would connect on a deep ball or a big play every now and then but it really looked like he had the same issues Gabbert did for us in that he wouldn't even let plays develop at times, he would just immediately check the ball down on 3rd and long. Very frustrating to watch as it felt like every time him and the offense took the field, it was going to 3 and out. If Dak never improved from his Sophomore year, he would be completely irrelevant today but his accuracy got better the next two seasons, as did the big plays without committing more turnovers. I was really impressed with Dak this past year and he had career numbers across the board in arguably the toughest conference in football.

66% completion percentage (career high)
3793 yards (career high)
29 TDs (career high)
5 INTs (career low)

The only area where he saw a drop off was his rushing game but he was still able to get 10 TDs this year. Just a phenomenal improvement by Dak. Not sure how he will be in the Pros and I really like Driskel in Chip's offense but I was just high on Dak in the mid-rounds. After a couple of days to calm down after we passed on Dak in the 4th, I'm content with getting Driskel two rounds later.

Echo these feelings as another Gator fan. While the offensive coaching was pretty terrible for his tenure at UF, Driskell biggest issue was his decision making. He made so many bonehead throws it was unreal. The guy has all the tools, its from the neck up that Chip has to work on.

I think he will have familiarity with the offense based on the ones he played in at Florida and LA Tech. I think he will play pretty well in preseason and should make the roster.

yep i think he will make the roster as well. Chip likes to keep at least 3 QBs

Whoever loses the starting job this year between Kaep and Gabbs will mostly likely get the boot next offseason and Driskel will take over as the backup.
Best case scenario for the kid. Sit back N let Gabbert take over for a year or 2. No need to rush a project QB out there N really kill his hopes of becoming something other than a career backup.
At this point in the draft you're pretty much just looking for scheme fit and potential because you can't count on a 6th round pick being much of anything. This Driskel character seems to have the requisite physical abilities, we'll see if the Florida years better represent what happens to Driskell when the competition level increases.

Agreed. Immensely talented QB, just a lot of head scratching decisions. I think he is coming to a great situation to be honest. He will not be looked upon to contribute in the next year or two so he will have a chance to catch up to the speed of the game while just sitting back, learning and getting his reps in practice and preseason. Barring any injuries, I don't expect to see him take meaningful snaps until 2018 at the earliest.

Where did you play?
I was just a lowly D-3 linebacker at a school that dumped football over 30 years ago. What does that have to do with my opinion that QB numbers put up in Conference USA don't usually translate to success in the NFL? I have a feeling your snarky comment is a carryover because I think Kap stinks, just a guess. I keep getting blindsided in non-Kap threads for no reason and I am pretty sure why.

No not a carry over im no die hard Kap fan I was hoping he got traded actually. Just got aggravated with all the negativity following the draft. We went out and got what we needed but people still complaining.

Hey maybe you could try out, you know we didn't draft any linebackers lol.

6th round pick our franchise QB, I mean your not serious? dude is a perfect fit for Chip's offense solid backup.

Why the fxxk are we looking for a back-up when we don't even have a legit starting QB? That is the question!!

Because the Hall of Fame QB fairy retired so now wanting one isn't enough anymore, we actually have to wait for one to be available and take him ourselves.

Agree

Great challenge for our new coaching staff.

What is your evaluation on Wentz and the numbers he put up vs that competition (or lack thereof)? Driskel was definitely not the answer at Florida but nobody has looked good other than Will Grier this past year, and that's in a different system than Driskel played in. I think the biggest reason for people's excitement for Driskel is that he looked good in a spread system and that is what we have now. If we still had Harbaugh/Tomsula's offense, I'd be after with this selection but in the 6th round, in this system, he appears to be a great fit.
Why get excited and/or complain about a 6th round project? If he works out, great, but who's going to hold their breath?
