We give him the new contract and they get a star QB on a rookie contract?

I am a big Lance believer, but if that was the only equation I'd strongly consider it.

Purdy would my main reason not to do it. I believe that we will have a franchise QB between the two, one way or another.

Yeah but Mac, the salary cap says no. Unless we lose half a dozen of our best players.
At the rate these salaries are going the NFL needs to make some changes to the cap. Teams cannot field a team if 1 player eats 20% of cap room. Maybe they can designate one franchise player that does not count against the cap? Just a thought. Because the money is getting really out of control.

Part of me agrees or bring in max contracts like in basketball. But the other part enjoys the salary cap and teams having make sacrifices and how teams can turn around after one good draft.

I've written this several times over the past few years. My suggestion would be not making the QBs part of the cap since they're the highest paid. That would allow teams to draft and develop young QBs instead of feeling like they have to force them into the lineup quickly. More than one QB has seen their careers cut short because they didn't have time to learn or were forced to play behind a poor line with no weapons.

The NFL owners and player association should be in favor of this since it would produce a better product.

Maybe, just maybe, the answer according to John Lynch is to build the best team ignoring the qb that you can. Then pick up the best draftee and FAs or whatever and run with them for 4 to 5 years then trade them. And start again at the qb position. Let the Green Bay's spend twenty percent of their cap on one guy. Would it work? Might do. Eventually there has to be a way round the greedy quarterback syndrome.

I agree with this team building process until you land a generational talent at QB like a Mahomes, Allen or Burrow. Don't be like the Giants, Cardinals and Vikings who are paying a bunch of money for QBs who don't elevate your team enough.

I would phrase it as JL knocks it out of the park up and down the roster and QB / some off skill guys, it's up to KS

This. Plus it's been awhile since a team with a cheap rookie deal qb won and that was Mahomes.

What else do you want teams to do when only about 5 elite QBs are walking the earth? If you are fortunate to get a decent/good QB you are going to have to pay him unless you want to start the process over.

I would want them to let the decent/good QB walk and retain the good team and start the process over. Do you think the Giants are going to win a Super Bowl with Daniel Jones? Then what the f**k is the point of paying him.

And guess what you get Lamar in there and not a platoon of Howell / Brisket.. that price tag jumps; players generate value, owners have to pay em but the players make the product.
