Kirk Cousins

Shop 49ers game tickets
Vikes kind of worry me. Kirk knows the Shanny mind somewhat. They have a system that is similar to San Frans; Beast Tight End, Good Running game, Vikings have Diggs. I hope Shanny and the boys do not underestimate the Vikings like they did with Atlanta.

I wouldn't call 190 yd and zero touchdowns in regulation in a playoff game clutch.

Leading your team down the field in overtime of a playoff game to score the game winning touchdown is the definition of clutch. Cousins got it done when it mattered most.

Nobody looks back at the 1981 NFC Championship Game and goes "wow, Montana got picked off 3 times, he was lucky to get out of there with a win!"

People say "Montana led the 49ers all the way down the field late in the game and threw it up beautifully to Dwight Clark to put the 49ers in front for good! That was The Catch baby!"

5 years from now the only thing that anyone will remember from this game is "damn, Cousins was clutch as hell in OT!"

Yes, he is just like Joe...except Joe regularly beat winners.
LOL

I swear that after you made your post, i was gonna say, in before someone says you're comparing him to Joe. Lol.

The point is Woo, that people wont be talking about his zero TDs during regulation when people look back at this game.

They probably will not talk about thos game for long. It is a WC win against a team they beat in the WC round two years ago with Keenum. A little different than beating the Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game.

Well...Kirk Cousins was THE guy he wanted to run his offense here. Kyle has seen what Cousins was capable of doing on a mediocre to poor Redskins team and wanted him as his long-term QB. That should inform us.

Shanahan drafted Beathard, brought in Hoyer and passed on Mahomes and Watson.

Love his playcalling, not his eye for qb talent. He lucked out with Jimmy G.

Less than 200 yards and no TDs in regulation.
It took a bad day by Drew Brees, and two major boneheaded mistakes by Brees and Payton to get to OT.

Meh

The Saints offense pretty much didnt do much except some gimmick plays by Hill (not Brees )

Yep, the Saints offense was turrible yesterday.

Beathard was never considered to be a franchise QB, Hoyer was a stopgap, Watson is overrated and not a good fit to the system imho.
I give you Mahomes.

I think he's a very good evaluator of QB talent along with being a terrific coach.

He's the guy who pushed for Cousins in the 4th round, pushed for Carr and Garoppolo over Manziel in Cleveland, helped Schaub and Ryan have career years with him calling the plays.

There are teams that go decades without a franchise QB and Shanahan ended up with one in his first year as HC.

Also, people need to understand there is a massive difference between evaluating NFL quarterbacks and projecting how good a college kid might be in the pros. It is not even close to the same thing.

Garoppolo is very good
Hoyer sucks
Bearhard sucks
Cousins is above average

Not sure why you keep bringing up Hoyer. Kyle CLEARLY wanted to bring in a veteran QB who was familiar with his system when Kyle first got here. He was never brought in to be our franchise QB.

Can you name another veteran QB who was familiar with his system that Kyle could have brought in instead?

Let's keep things in context:

He drafted Beathard as a long-term backup for Cousins, not as the future FQB.

He brought in Hoyer to teach the offense to a bunch of guys who had never run it at all, not to be the long-term starter.

As to Mahomes and Watson, Kyle was convinced Cousins was coming to SF so why draft an unproven rookie?

He did not "luck out" with Garappolo. Belichick made Lynch a deal he couldn't refuse in the face of the outside chance that Cousins would not come to SF for whatever reason.

I'm staying with Kyle's opinion.

Cousins would have been a disaster here. He is above average but not good against good teams.

Kyle or John made a great decision to go with unproven JG over the established and older Cousins. Big prpps for that!

You don't know how Cousins would have done here under Kyle's direction and in his system. For that matter, neither do I. What I do know is that Kyle BELIEVED he would do well here otherwise he would not have been seeking to bring him here.

In Kyle we trust.

Hoyer was brought in as a short term QB that already knew Shanahan's offense and could help everyone else hit the ground running in installing it. It was basically either him or Matt Schaub as far as veterans that knew the offense and were actually available. Not sure why anyone would complain about that. When you're blowing up the roster and filling it with a ton of young players, you want some smart veterans that can already run your system.

Beathard was a flyer on a QB with a strong arm, coming out of a pro style offense in college. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't but no QB is ever guaranteed. Regardless of how good a QB evaluator a coach might be, everyone misses sometimes. Bill Walsh missed(Gio Carmazzi, told the Colts to pass on Peyton Manning.) Mike Holmgren missed(Brandon Weeden). Bill Belichick missed(Ryan Mallett). Ozzie Newsome(Kyle Boller). And on and on. Its not a science. Its a combination of evaluating skill+coaching+luck. In anycase, a late 3rd isn't a big deal. The vast majority of the QBs picked at that point in the draft tend to flop, no matter who is picking.

As far as Cousins goes, over the past 5 years he ranks Top 10 in the NFL in QB rating, completion %, Y/A and more categories. He's put up very good numbers while largely playing on crap teams. He may not be in the elite tier but he fits comfortably in that second good QB tier.
atm I hate to say it...

Kirk 1-0 as starter in playoffs
Jimmy G 0-0 as starter in the playoffs

hope this changes after a week.

I still stick with my cousins has a better deep ball.
