I have nephews who just now saw their first chapter of 49ers/cowboys in the playoffs. With the great job done by CBS and all of the networks to hype up the matchup.. they now understand how big of a deal it is.
As a fan who watched many, many big games vs the Cowboys, Packers, and giants, I always scoffed at the notion that seattle was somehow on par with those teams in terms of rivalries.
The rivalries change over time. In the 90s sure the Cowboys was the rivalry, then it was the Pack. But in the Harbaugh days it was Seahawks and that thing was white hot. First it started at Stanford. Harbaugh coached Stanford to one of the greatest upsets in history. USC was favored by 41 and Stanford won outright making it the largest point spread upset in college football history. The famed "what's your deal" quote came after Stanford went to USC and won 55-21. So this was a pretty intense college rivalry that carried over to the NFL and the games were brutal, with Seattle often getting the better of it.
Now we are at a point where I see it shifting to the Rams. No real rivalry with the Cowboys. I mean is there a Mike McCarthy Shanahan rivalry? No. Meanwhile is there a McVay, Shanny rivalry, yes. There is also an obvious NorCal SoCal rivalry if you're into baseball and Giants Dodgers. If you want to say 49ers Cowboys in the day was the biggest rivalry I'll respect that but today's players are more juiced up for Rams than Boys or NY Giants imo.
