Richard Sherman, 49ers Grade: B

The recent track record of superstar cornerbacks leaving their old homes for new digs is mixed, at best. Nnamdi Asomughawent from being a true side eraser for the Raiders to being borderline unplayable for the Eagles at age 31. Darrelle Revis was a major disappointment after leaving the Jets for the Buccaneers; and while Revis produced an above-average season in winning a Super Bowl with the Patriots, age caught up to him during the second year of his second run with Gang Green. Revis was essentially finished at 31. Things went better for Aqib Talib in Denver, but after Talib's age-31 season, the Broncos decided they were better off going with Bradley Roby and shipped Talib off to the Rams.

Sherman will turn 30 later this month and will be coming off a ruptured Achilles tendon he suffered in November, so the odds are against him returning to his perennial All-Pro form for a significant length of time. The good news is that he landed in a welcoming location with the 49ers. The Seahawks were more diverse in their coverages than some might suggest, but Sherman's size, instincts and spatial awareness made him a perfect fit for the Cover-3 that Seattle ran as its base coverage. Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was an assistant with the Seahawks and Jaguars under Gus Bradley, so he should have no difficulty finding a familiar spot for Sherman along the sidelines.

A key difference is that Revis and Asomugha went to completely different defensive schemes while Sherman will be asked to do pretty much the exact same thing with the 49ers as he did with Seattle. Those guys were dominant man coverage CB's who went to zone heavy schemes, putting them in vastly different roles.
Yeah, both Revis and Asom were pure man CBs. Sherman is a student of the game. The film game prep that is needed to be good players in this scheme. I think he's going to take on a leadership role with the DBs and can show these young guys what it takes.

You people and your knee-jerks

The part I really enjoyed today were the repeated twitter feeds posted that were hours late...over and over and over again....

As long as he's:
  • healthy
  • helps us beat Seattle (X's 2)
  • continues to break-up-passes
  • gets INT's
  • and mentors the young ones

I'm
MM's livecast from earlier

I like this tho

.
Who knew years later I would hate Crabtree and like Sherman lmao

He had incentive to get as much time away from home lmao
I hate this guy and he signed for us out of spite for being cut from Seattle. But that's the exact situation where he thrives. If healthy, he'll be good for us.
It has begun lol

+1
Here's my question: will he still be able to get away with all of the holding that made him so tough to play against?
