Paraag throws a almost impossible clause in the deal (All Pro) and Sherman's ego about being the greatest CB to ever walk this earth signs it.
If he performs well enough to trigger those incentives, we will have still gotten a great deal.
Yeah it works out for both parties. If Sherm is an all pro we are in business.

They'll continue looking for CBs through FA and the draft but I dont see them throwing any big money at the position. Mid tier to lower CB in FA plus one taken somewhere in the first 3 rounds of the draft is what I expect.
Agreed...if we look for another CB it will probably be after the first wave and targeting players like Rashaan Melvin or Travis Carrie.

So did we determine it's all Pro and not pro bowl ?.......you can have 4 guys back out of the pro bowl and have mediocre participants , then have 32 mil guaranteed.

I don't think what is effectively a 1 year, $9M deal stops the Niners from going after any high end FA CB.

Once again I read that to guarantee the 16 million in base salary for 2019 and 2020, Sherman just has to make the Pro Bowl in 2018. I thought it was the Pro Bowl gets him a 3 million bonus, but no guarantees on future salary, and that an ALL Pro 2018 is what nets him the base guarantees going forward? Is one of those scenarios the fact yet, or is it still speculation?
I am kind of worried if Sherman is going to be that good this year, coming off these 2 surgeries? I guess if he is a shadow of his former self, then we can walk away after 1 year, and just roughly 9 million. If he plays just average, I hope he doesn't make the Pro Bowl because of his name, or multiple people declining it or missing it due to injury, because 3 million is still 3 million we can use to improve the roster going forward.

Since this was announced, and after much thought, can't see signing a 30 year old coming off a season ending injury when there are "healthier" options.

They are looking at 2019 for our run at the Lombardi. We probably will draft a corner, or sign a mid tier FA, or both. These guys are building a team, not buying one.

...I don't know why going after a top FA CB would mean they're "buying" a championship. (though if it ends in a Super Bowl, lets make it happen)
Sherman's contract can easily be removed. I'm not saying they will GET a top guy... but I also don't understand why people are under the belief that the FO feels like they shouldn't make offers to these guys.

He's 29. They gave him basically a one yr deal for like $7 million (bills signed davis for like $5 million) if he balls out he will get paid for it, if not who cares. The contract works for SF.

Look at what you just said and look at what they are doing with contracts. Making "an offer" is way different than being determined to get a certain guy and outbid everyone. They aren't going to go hog wild and be determined to get certain guys at any cost just because we have a need there. They are building, not buying. I didn't say they wouldn't participate, it's just that many posters believe we are going to go out and secure two or three more top tier FA, just because they think the team should. I don't believe we will. I think we get some guys and get better, but keep "aggressively prudent" in mind. Sherman's contract is almost hysterically team friendly unless he regains super star status. How many other top FAs are going to want to sign similar deals?

Checked my calendar several times yesterday to make sure it wasn't April 1. Did the same thing when I woke up today.
Nope. Richard Sherman is a 49er

I think this is the way to go. IF Sherman shores up the other side of the field, we just need depth. I think this opens up the possiblities of trading up now for an elite pass rusher in the draft.

History is not on the side of Sherman as far as coming back to the same level post injury. I hope he plays well for us, and is a good mentor for our young secondary on how to play in this scheme. His leadership this year could pay huge dividends in coming years with these kids. I hope we cut Ward, and bring Reid back on a team friendly deal to battle Tartt for the SS spot, and who ever loses the SS battle, immediately becomes the back up at both safety spots, since both Reid and Tartt have shown the ability to play FS.
We also need to add 1 or 2 more CB's this off season, to not only be back ups for now, but to potentially become starters if and when Sherman leaves after this season. Hopefully we can find a young CB on a different roster who we can trade for, and then look at the 3rd or 4th round to draft a CB who we can groom for a year or two.
