They are looking at 2019 for our run at the Lombardi. We probably will draft a corner, or sign a mid tier FA, or both. These guys are building a team, not buying one.

...I don't know why going after a top FA CB would mean they're "buying" a championship. (though if it ends in a Super Bowl, lets make it happen)

Sherman's contract can easily be removed. I'm not saying they will GET a top guy... but I also don't understand why people are under the belief that the FO feels like they shouldn't make offers to these guys.

So Sherman is a backup? I don't see them giving top money for another CB...like you said they can move on from him in a yr and they can look at next yrs FA fo go CB then.

Draft a guy in 2nd or 3rd and let him learn for a yr...just my opinion, but I see them going all in on Arob and signing a Pierre Desir, Byron Maxwell, Ross Cockrell kinda of player (depth).

Since this was announced, and after much thought, can't see signing a 30 year old coming off a season ending injury when there are "healthier" options.

Healthier, but none better. If it comes down to taking a chance with an elite CB like Sherman or paying twice as much to an amazingly average CB like Trumaine Johnson, gimme Sherman.

They'll continue looking for CBs through FA and the draft but I dont see them throwing any big money at the position. Mid tier to lower CB in FA plus one taken somewhere in the first 3 rounds of the draft is what I expect.

Agreed...if we look for another CB it will probably be after the first wave and targeting players like Rashaan Melvin or Travis Carrie.

I think this is the way to go. IF Sherman shores up the other side of the field, we just need depth. I think this opens up the possiblities of trading up now for an elite pass rusher in the draft.

Yeah, I can show the grocery long list of injuries we've had at DB over the years. We better not bank on just Sherman esp. in a CB FA pool that is pretty deep. Plus, given the amount of time we might spend in nickel and dime sets, you needs at least 4 great CB's. Finally, you draft a CB who you feel you can develop under Sherman for a year.
So how much money is he actually counting against the cap this year?

I hope he signs officially today and do a press conference so tomorrow we can concentrate on tampering.
Love this addition even if he isn't the same Sherman from Seattle. We know he's a system fit, he's a great mentor for Akhello, adds much needed veteran experience to our secondary. And the cherry on top he's going to want to whip Seattle.

This doesn't change the fact that we will most likely draft 1-2 CBs in the draft as well, but Sherman is an excellent stop gap to develop a mid-round CB into an eventual starter.
I think the common theme here is that we all hope we draft a corner early like 2nd or 3rd round, that can see the field this year, but also basically be groomed by Sherman to take his spot after this season. I am torn with our 1st round pick, I want Edmunds really bad, because he's still only 19, and is so dominant and can play pretty much all the LB spots. But if one of the elite QB's slide to 9, I can easily see the Bills moving up to get that QB, and paying out the nose to us. They have 2 1st round picks this year, so we could easily get those, and quite a bit more. Anyone know on the value chart what our 9th pick would net us from the Bills? I know if a team is moving up for a QB that pick is valued a tad higher than normal on the charts.
This would have been one of the all time great April Fool's Day pranks here on the WZ, but its true!!!

The struggle is real
Question for the more knowledgeable posters:

Was this not the most cost effective signing out of all the potential CBs? Meaning, we got him for dirt cheap if he's not up to par, and if he plays lights out he's still comparable to other top corners?

This seems like a medium risk high reward signing to me.

If we had signed talib we'd be paying out the ears even if he plays like crap

TJ is going to be more expensive than Sherman without the potential upside, and without the locker room presence (spoon models his entire game off sherman)

I love this signing. Could be wrong..... but if Sherman believes in himself to sign a deal like this, he's fully committed to being the best.

Edit: he's gonna have to be one of the best CBs in the league to unlock his full earning potential, which maxes out at 4th-ish best money? What's not to like?

He becomes our best coach on defense as well
