One big thing about this signing is that Seattle lost practically all of their leadership in one off season, on defense.

Sherman, Bennett and potentially Chancellor. Those guys all brought more than just talent and skill. They brought a certain kind of fire and leadership that made everyone else better and held them accountable. That stuff is hard to replace.

Reminds me of how our defense lost Justin Smith, Pwillis etc all in one off season, the loss was more than just their talent but our heart and soul.

They're also listening to offers for Thomas.

Unquestionably a good move for three reasons:
1. The contract recognizes that the injury might slow him down but also he could continue to play at a Pro Bowl level. Compensation is commensurate.

2. He is a great student of the game who knows how to play the game and teach it to others. He brings veteran leadership to a young secondary.

3. The timing is genius. There has been three headline-making moves leading into FA: The Peters trade. The Talib trade...and now the Sherman signing. All three shake the tree. At a time that the Rams were getting all the publicity for being a big mover in improving their team, Lynch/Shanahan go out and make a move that not only improves the team but does so at an ideal time. It spikes the Rams' cannon. The talk now shifts from LA to SF...and at a level similar to Charles Haley or TO going to Dallas.

While the Peters and Talib trades both come with character questions, the Sherman deal does not, and it comes just as the FA door actually opens. This signing, along with the reminder of Jimmy G, clearly establishes SF as a preferred FA destination. Sherman had made other appointments with other teams but the fact he went to SF first and never left, sends a huge message to other FAs. That in itself may be worth the signing even if he never sees the field.

great post

Yep

Sherman's deal has many protections for the team, including $2 million in 46-man roster bonuses, $1 million playtime incentive, and a $3 million Pro Bowl incentive. He also reports that Sherman gets more guarantees in 2019-20 if he makes the Pro Bowl in 2018. So Sherman is betting on himself quite a bit.

"Reading on other teams forums...its pretty funny.

All seem to have no concept of contract structure and think Niners are just pissing away salary cap space.

Devil is in the details. Let them think that. In a few weeks they'll be like "where did they get all that money after signing Garoppolo and Sherman?"

lol

There was a comment on a Rams forum that thought if he made a Pro Bowl this year it would trigger 16 mil guaranteed PER YEAR (32 mil guaranteed). Homey...learn to read.

I am still curious what number he wears.

I've been reading the forum all day to clarify. Pro Bowl or All Pro...is it officially All Pro...put me out of my misery..

Rather see a couple versus the midget. He's going to be so motivated for those games

Yeah anybody got info on that? Ward is el #25
Great Signing.

I have always hated Crabtree for not fighting for that ball and not backing up Kaep in the media, and now this finally will erase Crabtrees weak ass from our teams history in my eyes.

People on here need to let by go of the past, When I want to remember the good niner days, i dont think back to Crabtree and Harbaugh, I think back to Steve Young and Joe Montana.

I agree why is this thread still talking about the contract? This is not a big splash signing. This is a developmental deal I one that's reasonable for both parties and make sense for Sherman makes sense for us. Hopefully the guy can come back I like a veteran guy cornerback who knows what it takes to be successful that will be good for the locker room and other DBS especially. Look no way this guy is going to get 500 snaps next season. Just like Bo shouldn't have had as many snaps as he did did this season. You just can't come back from an Achilles in a year just can't do it so. So hopefully sherm helps out in the locker room and on the field here and there. That would be just great. This is a smart move by the Niners it's a smart move by Sherman best wishes to all
