I doubt an agent could have done any better with a CB coming off an Achilles. Remember this guy isn't even running yet in the process of rehab. He has no leverage other than his past. So the contract has to reflect the process of injury recovery for CB.

The guaranteed money is split into every step of the recovery, from signing (3mil), after TC(2mil roster bonus), and playing incentives to reflect how well he has retained his talent after the injuries. And this is just for his first year of recovery. In 2019 and 2020, the guaranteed are high and fully, once the team accepted him for that year.

It's a fair deal for both sides.

The more I am hearing, the more I am realizing it is not about the financial compensation for Sherman. He is a smart guy, has already made a lot of money and hopefully has invested it wisely. This was about hefting a boulder sized chip on his shoulder and going after the Squawks, who he feels did him wrong.

I can see one more scenario playing itself out. He is not ready at the start of the year, but eventually comes in and proves he is back and he has healed. Even if he does not meet his incentives to guarantee the final two years, I could see the 9ers wanting to engage the final years to keep him. Particularly if he is helping the young corners.

Like in the article, the 49ers only team in the running that can offer him 2 times a year against Seattle and he gets to stay in Cali.

And to add, as of right now NFL teams are most likely going by his doctors reports and some imaging on the injuries to form a contract for him. There's no way they will invest tens of millions up front in guaranteed for him on that.
Thanks qnn, this just clears up our CB position, and it isn't what i thot. What we have here is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but as of this moment, we have no functional CB to pair with Spoon.... So we still enter FA needing a starting CB. If we cant' find a starter, then CB is back on the board as a must have in draft, bringing our 1st rd pick back to EDGE, interior OL (OG , C , OG), 2 LBs starters, and CB. RS is a phenomenal player, top of the heap CB. But he is NOT a guarantee, so we have to FA and draft accordingly. Rereading this contract and what it means just says we may have one of the best CBs ever, but we also may have GACK...as in nothing, if RS doesn't heal up well...and most important, doesn't return to the general ball park of his standard play. That means we still don't have our other CB. Not having started rehab yet , means he is still healing , altho we assume he is doing the standard rehab that most post op Achilles do.

CB is NOT settled as some have said. It is obvious JL and KS are trying to shore up the above positions BEFORE draft, but the above are all still in the mix for draft. I hope we nail down at least one LB, hopefully a Corner, at least one OG(please make it Norwell), perhaps a C , and an EDGE. The RS signing is just a hope....and we all hope he heals well enough to play up to somewhat of his former pre surgery caliber.

This. Sherman is also the very last guy in sports who you want to count out. The guy has made an entire hall of fame career off of proving people wrong. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he completes every incentive and is paid every single penny and then some when all is said and done. Athletes with his intelligence and motivation don't come around very often and people questioning why he would sign such a contract must have not been paying attention to his life story and career.

Here's his contract

Risk? Zero.

It's a good contract. Love the way it's worked out but the risk is that if he doesn't pan out then we have nobody else to take his place. And we missed out on a strong FA cb group and missed out on possibly drafting a top cb at 9
Let's just hope he gets less holding and PI calls than Rashard Robinson. With the new PI rule, Sherman probably even more motivated to push the limits.
Sherman working with Spoon gets me excited.

Understand what you're saying - but the way his contract is built, we could still do anything we want in FA and the draft. If a CB is BPA at 9, I wouldn't be opposed to taking him. Signing Sherman just means we don't have to reach.
Dude wants to win a Super Bowl in a Niner uniform. I don't know about you guys but that would sure make me forget about a lot of things.
He will be cut before the season.

Respect for Sherman with this contract. He definitely bet on himself.
It's a good signing for both sides and I'm glad the team went with a scheme fit for the CB spot instead of listening to the public and going after Butler who doesn't fit the profile. I still hope we go after Colvin as a depth piece for the secondary.

He's been betting on himself his entire life and always coming out on top. Not sure why so many people are surprised or criticizing him for this. The guy has always been fueled by proving people wrong for doubting him.
is Dick giving a presser today?

Getting Prime turned out alright for us.
And I think that he was more of a pure athlete. Sherman can teach the young guys technique.

More than that, I think he could be someone to help Garoppolo even. Sherman's strength isn't so much his athletic ability as it is his awareness, football IQ and attention to detail.

Pointing out tendencies on film coming from a CB's perspective could be useful to a QB if they care to learn.
The sound of crying seahag fans, the smell of burning jerseys, this move is already a win in my mind!
