i think Tartt can be a helluva WILL in the Seattle 4-3 - protected player that gets to use his athleticism to just hunt the ball carrier. Ray-Ray can also do a good job.
can see Tartt - Bow - Ray-Ray at LB
we have serious size up front allowing us to go smaller and more athletic at LB - protect them and let them play hard and fast

I think tartt is not the answer at safety, he had a season to prove himself and disappointed , also I guess this signing couldn't be any worse than jim O'Neil was

Tartt has horrid post snap awareness. At this point I don't see him excelling into anything more than a backup safety/special teams ace. Too many times in the last couple of years he's just been caught standing and staring at plays happen around him.

Doesn't seem to me that Jax had all that bad of a D.
Jags 2016 Def Rankings:
Total yards #6 (Nice!)
Total points #25th (WTF?!)
Then I checked the Jag's atrocious turnover rankings:
-26 differential
Almost 2 giveaways per game, 5th worst (NE and ATL were the best in the league for fewest giveaways)
Only 1 takeaway per game, 2nd worst
Looks to me (didn't see 2 seconds of a jags game, just from stats) like the scheme is sound, but the TOs killed them.

Would someone (thl, jrg, etc.) be interested in making a "how the Seattle 4-3 works" thread. Description of it, cut ups, strengths, weaknesses, football geek stuff.

He is needed for the robber we don't have anyone to play the high safety. Ward is not fast enough. Tarrt would be a great robber

Blair, jones, and carradine will all likely play better in a 4-3. Problem is redundancy at 3/5T and lacking at 0/1T. Can see:
NT Williams and lb Ingram in FA
R1: trade down, Malik hooker
R2(TRADE ACQUISITION): taco charlton or takk McKinley
R2: Haason Redick

I get what you are saying, But Fangio deserves all the respect he gets here. He is one of, if not the best DC this franchise has ever had. At least give him the respect he deserves.
You have gotten very cynical over the years. Bashing guys like Tomsula, stating he was an overrated DL coach. Making him sound barely competant enough to tie his own shoes. etc.
Its OK to want change, but you dont have to justify said change by needlessly bashing guys that did great work for us.
Its not Tomsulas fault that Baalkie hired him as HC. And its not Fangios fault that Baalkie chose to hire Tomsula over him.
Its ok to be excited about the new hires and still love Tomsula as a DL coach and Fangio as a DC for their time as 49ers. I promise its ok.
The Fangio talk got so loud because well, there were legitimate stories leading to the fact that the 49ers wanted him bakc, and hell, he may want to come back. People didnt just start pulling that rabbit out of their hat before the stories appeared.

No we don't.
I'm not talking about what we need to make the defense a top 5. That's at least a year or two out. I'm talking about fielding a functioning defense that won't give up 300 rush yards a game. Lets shoot for a D that is in the top half of the league first.
For that, we need 3 things. Pass rusher, run stuffing DT, and an athletic LB. We need these 3 positions regardless of scheme.
At safety, We have 2 pro bowlers and 2 1st round picks. We don't need a safety to make the defense work. We may need one to make it perform at a high level, but that's later on.

Nice project lineup MTL. Of course there's FA and draft so that's the projected right now IMO.
DRAFT ANALYSIS:
"He's a true free safety. The concern is frame (5-foot-11, 193 pounds) and durability is an issue. He can play strong safety, but I worry about his frame over a 16-game season. This is a kid who's a natural center fielder, but he'll move up to make a play (against the run)." --

Ward has plenty of speed. He ran a 4.47 at NIU pro day with a partial broken food which we remember.
I think Lynch decides to move him and slide Reid to SS. Can go after Trumaine J/Bouye if not draft one possibly in the first two rounds. I do love Ward to be on the uptrend of becoming an even better corner.

Any defensive player 2016 performance needs to begin with Chip Kelly and Jim O'Neil.
other than Bowman, Brock, Reid, Ward and Bethea we don't have a lot of info about the rest. Buckner and Robinson being outliers, jumping off the page. AA was serviceable under Tomsula, some would argue good. All this hate on AA is what have you done lately stuff. he gets another year of "show me".
