The OTTO linebacker?

Initially, the OTTO linebacker's assignments sound like those for a traditional SAM 'backer: help in run support; provide pass rush assistance when needed; play in coverage. The key difference is that, because the OTTO candidate has some defensive end traits, he allows a defense to be more multiple in its looks without radically changing the personnel.

Jaguars linebackers coach Robert Saleh calls the OTTO, "a pretty cool position," largely because it allows a defensive staff to "line him up in a bunch of different places, and it's a unique position because of the things we'll ask him to do." To gain the clearest understanding of what those myriad things might be, its important to understand that the OTTO functions much like the JACK linebacker in the old Buddy Ryan 46 defense.

Thats interesting stuff. I believe the OTTO linebacker in Jacksonville was our old friend Dan Skuta, who was a 3-4 OLB here. Played from a 3 point stance at times. He's listed at 6-2 265 lbs, so a bigger body type. Definitely some defensive end traits. Brooks and Lynch sound like that they'd fit that role.

Its just his terminology. I prefer to call it the elephant because its the same thing and a part of our history.

Cool. I thought the elephant in this system was the Leo, now you throw this Otto into the mix and there's way too many terms being thrown at me lol.

Nice to see us going back to our defensive roots. Kind of an updated take on Siefert's defense.

Different positions. Otto is their variation of the strongside LB. Elephant/Leo is the weakside DE.

That makes sense

I guess I read it wrong. But when you talk about using them in different positions that says elephant to me. The Bruce Irvin of the defense right? Never heard of a system that has two such positions that move around at LB. Please help me understand if you can.
Sounds like Melvin Ingram could make a nice OTTO

Allen is also intriguing for me because I believe he can play the Michael Bennett role on this team. He can play DT and really push the pocket from the inside. Hooker provides a skill that's very hard to duplicate in the NFL. A lot will depend on which direction we go in free agency but as of now I'd rather sign a good interior defensive linemen and draft Hooker.

Quarter.. BACK! We have none! No damn defense pick out the gate..

I don't think we have the personnel to run a 4-3 system. It's going to take a couple of drafts to get the players we need, IMO.

Brah, effing FA and the draft can easily fix the entire D. Yes, I said easily.

I wonder if they even looked at the roster before declaring a new scheme, but I think your right, I think we can make headway with FA and a good draft.

He's more of a pass rusher and not a guy you want AS MUCH in coverage. Better Leo role IMO but definitely not against him in SAM/Otto packages.

I think they did and this guy has been in both systems so we could in be in for a nice treat or a surprise, good or bad. I'm excited for FA to possibly make my first mock draft on the zone now that I seem to have a hair of credibility around here

This, can't wait to see it on the field. With the Draft and FA, fix our Defense in one season like the Giants did last year. Just need a QB now.
