Defensive 4-3 plan:

Arik Armstead --- DeForest Buckner --- Quinton Dial --- Aaron Lynch / Ronald Blair

Gerald Hodges --- NaVorro Bowman --- Ray-Ray Armstrong

Dontae Johnson ------- Will Redmond ------------------------------------------------- Rashard Robinson

Jimmie Ward (Single High) --------------------------- Jaquiski Tartt (Box) / Eric Reid

Top Draft Targets:
  • Myles Garrett
  • Jonathan Allen
  • Marshon Lattimore
  • Jamal Adams
  • Malik Hooker
  • Solomon Thomas
  • Reuben Foster

Free Agency Targets: Some are far more realistic than others (several will be off the board soon)
  • CB's: A.J. Bouye, Logan Ryan, Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne, Stephon Gilmore & Prince Amukamara (ages 25-27)
  • NT's: Brandon Williams, Dontari Poe, Alan Branch & Ian Williams/Glenn Dorsey/Chris Jones
  • DE's: Jabaal Sheard, Jason Pierre-Paul, Calais Campbell & Melvin Ingram
  • ILB's: Dont'a Hightower, Malcolm Smith, Sean Spence, Manti Te'o, Gerald Hodges & Mychal Kendricks
  • S's: Eric Berry (Colin Jones & Michael Thomas for ST)

I don't think Hodges fits the "Otto" position described earlier in the thread. Signing Melvin Ingram would put him as the top candidate for that position or allow Lynch to move into the "Otto" and have Ingram the" Leo". Everything else looks good to me.

Hodges would be a weak side LB or MLB in the scheme. Ingram would be the LEO and Lynch would stick on the strong side.

Yes sir...this is just the base as of today. Naturally, there are going to be some personnel moves that will change things over the next couple months!

Potential talent indeed...less to think about in this scheme so hopefully, with some health, we finally start to see some players playing more and thinking less (reveal true talent level). We'll see. Overall, I think this was a wise defensive scheme move (and I'm a big fan of the 3-4).

Good review overall. Curious as to why you have Buckner in the middle of the line though?

From MB yesterday:

(Left) Defensive tackle. This position should be the team's top pass-rushing interior lineman. The 49ers will want to have Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner on the field, and they must figure out which is best for this spot vs. left defensive end. The guess here is that Buckner would play this position with Armstead at defensive end.

Left defensive end. This player lines up opposite the "Leo" and typically has been a bigger player who can stop the run. Arik Armstead

Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see who we acquire and watch how these pieces are worked to fit in TC.
Armstead just ins't a 4-3 DE. He's way too slow to play that position.

Not necessarily...watch the Hawks DE's. They'll line them up way wide and crash them in. This allows them to funnel RB's inside (protect the edge) and gives them more room to get momentum in 1on1 pass rush situations. AA in 1on1 with space to move could be very nice (bull rush) esp. with Buckner next to him.

Good point...They have to play the young guys to see if they actually can play and create competition at every spot.

And certainly, many already have a lot of history in the 4-3 and others will have to sink or swim. I can't wait to see who sticks/thrives and who doesn't.

I think that's supposed to be RDT. The LDT is more the NT.

So Armstead-Dial-Buckner-Lynch as of now.
I hope Saleh has a strong defensive staff. He's somewhat the second HC because of Kyle focusing heavily on the offense.

On paper, that may be how they see it at first. But we'll have to see...may end up liking AA+Buckner next to each other as well. Who knows.

We pretty much know who the Staff will be

DL - Jeff Zgonina
LB - Jason Tarver
CB - Jeff Hafley

thank you NC for yet another logical post!

I especially like how you have AA in there. I seriously cannot understand the logic and thinking from fellow posters who think AA is done if we move to a 4-3. Apparently they did not watch him in college or even watch a lot of niner games. lol yes we may have been a 3-4 team but we had a lot of sets where we had 4 lineman in there too.
With Blair's versatility we might see him be our main rotational guy.
I don't know much about this guy, except that it is not an exciting hire. However, I hope he would be similar to Fangio.

When Harbaugh hired Fangio, I don't think people were excited. In fact, when at that time looking at Fangio's record, it seem like a bad hire, but that turn out to be a great hired by Jim Harbaugh.

On a side note, fans don't seem give enough credit to Jim Harbaugh for that great hire and the defence's performance under the Jim Harbaugh era.

Hopefully we get a good Defensive Senior assistant and maybe another LB's coach. Is Jim O'Neil staying on? He hasn't formally been fired yet to my knowledge....
