If Red Bryant can play DE in that scheme then so can Armstead!!!

With Blair's versatility we might see him be our main rotational guy.

I agree. He might not be a starter, but definitely a rotational player. He can play base end or inside at 3 tech at times.

Defensive 4-3 plan:

Arik Armstead --- DeForest Buckner --- Quinton Dial --- Aaron Lynch / Ronald Blair

Gerald Hodges --- NaVorro Bowman --- Ray-Ray Armstrong

Dontae Johnson ------- Will Redmond ------------------------------------------------- Rashard Robinson

Top Draft Targets:
  • Myles Garrett
  • Jonathan Allen
  • Marshon Lattimore
  • Jamal Adams
  • Malik Hooker
  • Solomon Thomas
  • Reuben Foster

Free Agency Targets: Some are far more realistic than others (several will be off the board soon)
  • CB's: A.J. Bouye, Logan Ryan, Trumaine Johnson, Morris Claiborne, Stephon Gilmore & Prince Amukamara (ages 25-27)
  • NT's: Brandon Williams, Dontari Poe, Alan Branch & Ian Williams/Glenn Dorsey/Chris Jones
  • DE's: Jabaal Sheard, Jason Pierre-Paul, Calais Campbell & Melvin Ingram
  • ILB's: Dont'a Hightower, Malcolm Smith, Sean Spence, Manti Te'o, Gerald Hodges & Mychal Kendricks

Good post!

Nice post, NC. I'm sure they will continue to tinker with the lineup as we add more players and find out everyone's ideal fit. This is a good start.
Im wondering how many more years were gonna be seeing more threads in the board titled: New HC/DC/OC insert name here.

its like one after the other
I know Saleh likes the 4-3 but I think its a stupid idea to switch. We just don't have the players for that type of defense. With Harbs we had a 3-4 and made NFC championship 3 years in a row cause our defense

Lynch ...Armstead ...NT ...Buckner ...OLB
...............Bowman ...........Armstrong

Its been touched on a little bit in this thread. This defense is more of a hybrid 4-3/3-4. Pete Carroll himself describes it as a 4-3 with 3-4 personnel. There's a lot of crossover between the two in this defense, so I don't think we have to worry about scheme fit all that much. We really just need to add more talent and hope Saleh knows how to call a good game.

Yeah, how many players from our front 7 do we have who have played in a 4-3 (college and/or pros)? I honestly don't know...

...anyone know for sure?

DL: DeForest Bucker, Quinton Dial, Chris Jones & Arik Armstead = No
DL: Glenn Dorsey, Mike Purcell, Ian Williams, Ronald Blair, Eli Harold, Tank Carradine, Zach Moore & Tony Jerod Eddie = Yes
LB: Navarro Bowman, Gerald Hodges, Ray-Ray Armstrong, Ahmad Brooks, Michael Wilhoite, Carl Bradford, Wynton McManis, Shayne Skov & Nick Bellore = Yes
LB: Aaron Lynch = No

thank you NC for yet another logical post!

I especially like how you have AA in there. I seriously cannot understand the logic and thinking from fellow posters who think AA is done if we move to a 4-3. Apparently they did not watch him in college or even watch a lot of niner games. lol yes we may have been a 3-4 team but we had a lot of sets where we had 4 lineman in there too.

Red Bryant was immoveable and there was nowhere for Frank to run during our 2011-13 contending years. He struck me as one of the most important pieces of their defense.

I'm not sure about each and every player, but definitely the majority of them have been in a 3-4 most of their careers, college and pro. This looks mostly accurate. I know Brooks played MLB in a 4-3 for a year or two while in Cincy.

There will be some flexibility in this defense to let guys do what they do best. Along the d-line, you have guys who will one-gap and two-gap. You have a 1, 3, and 5, tech. The LEO seems like he'll be a 7 or maybe even in wide-9 alignment. There's a lot of versatility there.

I hope we can get enough talent to push dial out.

Yeah, this is a verrrrry early projection lineup...about to change quite a bit over the next two months.

Dial is decent, but nothing special. Right now I see him at NT in this scheme, he's probably good enough to fill that role adequately. I'd love to get a Brandon Mebane type player for that role like Seattle had. Short, stubby run defender who was also disruptive in the backfield. It's a shame Ian Williams couldn't stay healthy, because I think he would have been perfect for it.
