To be fair, it was likely Saleh who decided we needed to play more W9 and C2 and then sourced the coaching talent needed to do it. Setting a vision and hiring the talent to make it happen is excellent leadership.

We all question his value because we're not seeing his daily contributions but I'm relieved our coaching staff is staying intact.

Thats pretty speculative. Saleh never talked about either scheme the last two years. Seems like it came with the hires rather than was the reason for the hires.

And that makes zero sense. Why would a C3 DC want to go to W9 100% of the time and flip to C2 a ton? No way these two were Saleh's call.

Yeah, I can't overly complain but I wasn't impressed in the least the last 3-4 games before Minnesota where Ford Bosa and the rest of the dline basically controlled the game. I kept seeing this "look how close the past 5 games have been" stat and you go back and see it was mostly the defense that kept it that way.

Baltimore? Last second drive given up by our defense.
NO- A TD in less than a minute thirty.
Falcons-a last second TD loses us the game
LAR- not a terrible game but we did worked over a good chunk
Seattle-we only got one stop the second half and they were 2 yards away after simply marching down the field. Wilson absolutely destroyed him. Luckily for us Greenlaw is a beast. The road would've been a lot harder if not for that tackle.

IMO yesterday was more a product of talent as I said. I mean I don't completely think Saleh is terrible but I don't he's this non replaceable assett. The difference between having certain players out there and not were night and day.

They were literally playing with guys off the street opposite Bosa. They went from Ford's backup to street free agents because of injury. They had to replace Kwon, Tartt, DJ Jones, Blair..etc.

I really think the biggest issue was losing Tartt. There's no way that anyone could scheme Harris into being a suitable replacement. He's not the same player against the run and he is an enormous liability in coverage. Before they lost their TE, the Saints basically built their entire gameplan around going right at him. Depth at safety will have to be addressed before next season.
Most definitely injuries played a role but I think his vanilla zone schemes are useless without a pass rush. Teams weren't doing anything special or over the top on us. Seattle for example. We were blitzing and not showing our hand the first half. The second half they got whatever they damn well pleased allowing RW and Carroll to do find an easy groove. That second half was direct reflection of him going to his vanilla ways and teams exploiting it. I already provided examples of all the others doing something similar.

I certainly would not want to see Peters leave.

Just take a look at the RAMS season and you might have your answer. They have invested ALOT in the players on the defensive side of the ball. They just fired Phillips and were ranked 20th. They got blown out on national TV a few times.

I think with offense you have a lot more room to scheme away weaknesses. On defense, pure talent usually wins. You can have a great scheme but if you don't have the horses to run it, your defense will be poor, no matter how well you call plays.

Just look at Fangio prior to joining the 49ers and how many times he called bottom 5 NFL defenses. He did so well that no one wanted to give him another DC position until Jim brought him to Stanford. Talent wins. You look a lot smarter when you have it and a lot dumber when you don't.

You could make an argument that if you pull Saleh out today, there would be zero drop off with the same talent level. Between Woods, Kocurek, Ryans, Warner and Sherman, the game plans would be fine.

Are you seriously trying to bring in a Bill Walsh comp???

Yes I am. Not saying Saleh is or ever will be as great as Bill but he's only just finished his 3rd year. After Walsh's first 2 years he wasn't being called a genius. There were many fans and writers saying that his system wasn't working. If there would have been social media in those days he and Eddie would have been ripped by all us experts. Then in year 3 after that great draft and getting Dean in free agency we started that great run. Then we would all be saying how smart Eddie was and Walsh was a genius. What I'm saying is fans are fickle and blow with the wind. As far as the defense being just as good without Saleh, that's something we will only know if and when he leaves. None of us knows how good any of those assistants would be as the OC any more than we know how good a HC Saleh would make.

Fair.

I think as long as this talent is healthy and now that the system is 3 years established, the rest of the coaching staff are in great shape for a seamless transition. IMHO of course.

Although its only a matter of time till he is a GM.
My main concern was that I didn't want him leaving and stripping coaches and staff members plus "rumored" Adam Peters for Browns GM.
Does Saleh make the players look good or did the players make him look good? I don't know.
This!!!!!!

Yes you do know. We've seen him with and without top talent at every position. He's a solid DC.
Saleh dodged a bullet.

Stefanski will be done in a couple years.

Browns always gonna Brown.

Truth! The best part is he learned a lot from the interview process. He'll be extra prepared next time.

Edit: look at the seasons before as evidence as well.

Dude they were missing guys all over the place and playing against mobile QBs. SF was on a unrealistic pace thru 7 games...that s**t wasn't sustainable.

Yes, Look at the personnel as evidence... I don't care who the DC is you're not throwing out a top D with guys like Coyle/marsh/ST/Colbert/mitchell all starting

Oscar is guessing on that take. Reports were it was Ed Dodds that was the top GM candidate connected to Saleh.

This is where Jed could show how much he cares about the team. This has nothing to do with the salary cap. Throw all the money at him. Pay him like a gm. Food and alcohol is so damn expensive at Levi's, put that money to use.

I enjoy Oscar and all those dudes, I do think he shouldn't really mislead people with stuff like that though. He's got zero proof to backup Peters was his top choice. That's pure speculation imo.
